The Salpausselkä ridges are a series of parallel, ice-marginal formations in southern Finland, deposited by the Scandinavian Ice Sheet during the final stages of the last glaciation. They form a distinctive arc across the country, from the Hanko Peninsula in the west to the Russian border in the east, and are among the most prominent glacial landforms in Europe.
The Salpausselkä ridges formed at the margin of the Scandinavian Ice Sheet during the Younger Dryas cold snap, when the ice front paused or readvanced. Meltwater streams deposited sand and gravel in front of the ice, creating a series of ice-marginal deltas and esker complexes. The ridges are composed of stratified drift, with well-sorted sands and gravels, and they often contain large boulders and deformed sediments indicating ice-push activity.
The ridges are not a single continuous feature but consist of three main arcs: Salpausselkä I, II, and III, with the first two being the most prominent. They are part of a larger system of ice-marginal formations that extend into Russia and Sweden. The formation was influenced by the Baltic Sea's changing levels and the isostatic rebound of the crust, which continues today at a rate of several millimeters per year.
The Salpausselkä ridges are characterized by a series of parallel, elongated hills that can reach up to 60 meters in height. They are often associated with kettle holes, eskers, and outwash plains. The ridges are composed of glaciofluvial material, with a distinct asymmetry: a steep ice-contact slope on the north side and a gentler outwash slope on the south.
The ridges are interrupted by gaps where meltwater rivers cut through, creating important water routes. The most notable gap is at Lahti, where the Salpausselkä ridge is breached by the River Vääksy. The ridges also form the drainage divide between the lake district of central Finland and the coastal plains, and they are dotted with numerous lakes and wetlands.
The Salpausselkä ridges have been inhabited since the Stone Age, as evidenced by archaeological finds of early settlements. The ridges provided dry, well-drained land for travel and settlement, and their gravel soils were used for early agriculture. The name 'Salpausselkä' translates to 'lock ridge' or 'barrier ridge', reflecting its role as a natural barrier and a strategic military position.
In modern times, the ridges are important sources of groundwater and aggregate for construction. The town of Lahti, known as the 'gateway to the lake district', is built on the Salpausselkä ridge. The ridges are also used for winter sports, particularly cross-country skiing, and the Lahti Ski Games are held annually on the slopes of the ridge.
Beyond the main ridges, there are several lesser-known features. The Salpausselkä III is a smaller, less continuous ridge that formed during a later readvance. The ridges are also home to rare geological formations such as 'kame terraces' and 'ice-walled lake plains'.
The Salpausselkä ridges have been studied for their role in understanding ice sheet dynamics and climate change. They are also a key site for studying the Baltic Ice Lake's drainage events, which caused rapid sea-level changes. In addition, the ridges are a habitat for several rare plant species, including the Arctic-alpine plant Arctostaphylos alpinus. The ridges are also a popular destination for geotourism, with several nature trails and interpretive centers.
The Salpausselkä ridges are a UNESCO Global Geopark candidate, recognized for their outstanding geological value.
