Sabrina Ionescu

Born in Walnut Creek, California, to Romanian immigrants, Ionescu began playing basketball at a young age, inspired by her older brother. She attended Miramonte High School, where she became a McDonald's All-American and was named California's Gatorade Player of the Year. At the University of Oregon, she played for the Ducks from 2016 to 2020, leading the team to the Final Four in 2019 and earning the Naismith Trophy as the national player of the year in 2020.

Her college career was defined by unprecedented versatility: she set the NCAA record for career triple-doubles (26) and became the first player in NCAA history to record 2,000 points, 1,000 rebounds, and 1,000 assists. She also won the Nancy Lieberman Award twice as the nation's top point guard.

Selected first overall by the New York Liberty in the 2020 WNBA Draft, Ionescu missed most of her rookie season due to an ankle injury. She returned to become the franchise's cornerstone, earning All-Star selections in 2023 and 2024. In 2023, she led the Liberty to the WNBA Finals, and in 2024 she helped secure the team's first championship, averaging 18.2 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 7.8 assists during the regular season.

Ionescu's impact extends beyond statistics: she set the WNBA single-season record for three-pointers made in 2023 (128) and won the Three-Point Contest in 2023. Her signature step-back jumper and court vision have drawn comparisons to NBA stars, and she has become a vocal advocate for women's sports and mental health.

Despite her Romanian heritage, Ionescu has not represented Romania internationally; she has expressed interest in playing for the U.S. national team but has yet to debut. Off the court, she has signed endorsement deals with Nike, Gatorade, and other brands, and she launched a signature shoe, the Nike Sabrina 1, in 2023—the first women's basketball signature shoe in over a decade.

She is also a published author, releasing a memoir titled Rock Hard in 2024, and she has been involved in philanthropic efforts, including supporting youth basketball programs and advocating for equal pay in sports.

Ionescu's triple-double record includes a remarkable game in 2020 against Stanford where she recorded 37 points, 11 rebounds, and 12 assists, becoming the first player in NCAA history to achieve a triple-double against a top-5 opponent. She also holds the Pac-12 record for career assists (1,070).

In the 2024 WNBA Finals, she recorded a triple-double in Game 5, the first in Finals history, cementing her legacy as a clutch performer. Additionally, she has been a vocal critic of the WNBA's scheduling and travel conditions, and she has used her platform to support LGBTQ+ rights, reflecting her commitment to social justice beyond the court.
