Historical background and structure

The Russian aerospace industry traces its roots to the Soviet era, when the state established a vast network of design bureaus (OKBs) and production plants. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, Russia inherited roughly 85% of the Soviet aerospace manufacturing capacity, but the industry faced severe economic disruption, leading to a sharp decline in production and a brain drain of engineers and scientists.1 In the 2000s, the government initiated consolidation efforts, creating United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) in 2006 to integrate civil and military aircraft manufacturers, and Roscosmos in 2015 to manage the space sector. Civil aviation and commercial programs

In the civil sector, the industry has developed several commercial aircraft, most notably the Sukhoi Superjet 100, a regional jet that entered service in 2011, and the Irkut MC-21, a narrow-body airliner designed to compete with the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 families. The MC-21 features advanced composite wings and the PD-14 engine, a new turbofan developed by United Engine Corporation. For instance, the Tupolev Tu-144, the world's first supersonic airliner, was developed in the Soviet Union and flew before the Concorde, though it was later retired due to safety and economic issues. The industry also pioneered the use of titanium in aircraft structures, notably in the Tu-22M and Su-27. In the space sector, Russia operates the only space station module assembly line, and its Progress cargo spacecraft have been resupplying the International Space Station since 1978. Additionally, the industry has a significant role in the development of hypersonic glide vehicles, such as the Avangard, which entered service in 2019.
