Russian Helicopters is a Russian aerospace holding company responsible for the development, manufacture, modernization, and support of civil and military helicopters. It operates within Rostec, Russia’s state-owned technology corporation, and brings together design bureaux, manufacturing plants, component producers, and service organizations. Its best-known engineering lineages are associated with the Mil and Kamov schools of helicopter design.1

Corporate identity and formation

Russian Helicopters was created in 2006 to consolidate Russia’s principal helicopter design and manufacturing assets. The holding structure links design bureaux with production sites, engine and gearbox specialists, maintenance organizations, and sales channels, allowing programs to be managed across their full life cycle rather than as isolated factory projects.

The company is a subsidiary of Rostec, whose aerospace portfolio also includes aircraft, engines, avionics, and other defense-related industries. Its corporate role is therefore broader than assembling airframes: it coordinates research, serial production, upgrades, export support, and continuing airworthiness for aircraft already in service. The arrangement reflects the industrial concentration that followed the restructuring of Russia’s post-Soviet aviation sector.

Aircraft families and engineering traditions

Russian Helicopters’ product range spans light utility aircraft, medium transport helicopters, heavy-lift machines, attack helicopters, and specialized naval or high-temperature variants. The Mi-8 and its derivatives form one of the world’s most widely recognized helicopter families, while the Mi-26 occupies the exceptional heavy-lift niche; the Ka-27 family serves naval missions, and the Ka-52 is an attack helicopter.

Mil-derived designs generally emphasize conventional main-and-tail-rotor layouts, whereas Kamov became internationally distinctive for coaxial counter-rotating rotors. Coaxial architecture removes the need for a tail rotor and can provide compactness and maneuverability, but it introduces demanding transmission, vibration, and control requirements. Russian helicopter engineering has consequently developed around specialized solutions for heavy loads, cold climates, shipboard operations, and austere infrastructure.

Manufacturing, customers, and certification

Production is distributed across several historically important aviation centers, including Kazan, Ulan-Ude, Rostov-on-Don, Arsenyev, Kumertau, and Progress-associated facilities. This network preserves distinct competencies: some plants specialize in transport helicopters, others in combat aircraft, composite structures, repairs, or particular rotorcraft families.

The company serves Russian state agencies, military operators, emergency services, energy companies, and civil aviation customers, while exports have historically been important to its business. Civil models must meet the requirements of the applicable national or international airworthiness authorities; international acceptance can be complicated by differences in certification, support infrastructure, export controls, and sanctions. These constraints have encouraged greater emphasis on domestic components, local maintenance capacity, and lifecycle support inside Russia.12

Lesser-known aspects

Russian Helicopters is notable not only for famous military models but also for the breadth of missions supported by derivatives of established airframes. Variants have been adapted for firefighting, medevac, cargo lifting, offshore work, geological survey, law enforcement, and Arctic or high-altitude operations. The ability to modify a common platform for sharply different users is a central commercial advantage of the holding’s product families.

A less visible part of the business is the support ecosystem surrounding older helicopters. Overhaul, spare parts, flight-hour monitoring, technical documentation, and modernization can remain economically significant for decades after an airframe leaves the factory. The holding also represents a continuity of Soviet design bureaux rather than a single newly created manufacturer: their accumulated expertise in rotor dynamics, transmissions, naval aviation, and heavy lift continues to shape the company’s identity.
