Natural rubber is an elastic polymer (polyisoprene) obtained from the latex of certain plants, primarily the Para rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis). It is a key industrial material, used in tires, medical gloves, and countless other products, and remains vital despite competition from synthetic rubbers.
Natural rubber is a polymer of isoprene (2-methyl-1,3-butadiene) with a cis-1,4 configuration, giving it elasticity. It is synthesized in the latex of many plants, but the commercial source is the Para rubber tree, native to the Amazon basin. The tree is tapped by making a thin incision in the bark, allowing latex to flow into a cup. The latex is a colloidal suspension of rubber particles in a serum containing proteins, resins, and sugars. Coagulation is induced by adding acid, and the resulting coagulum is processed into sheets or crepe. The rubber molecule has a molecular weight of 100,000 to 1,000,000, and its properties depend on the molecular weight distribution and the presence of non-rubber constituents.
Indigenous peoples of South America used rubber for waterproofing and making balls long before European contact. In 1839, Charles Goodyear's vulcanization process, which cross-links polymer chains with sulfur, made rubber durable and heat-stable, enabling its widespread use. The rubber boom in the late 19th century centered on the Amazon, but the British smuggled seeds to Kew Gardens and established plantations in Southeast Asia, which now dominate production. Today, Thailand, Indonesia, and Vietnam are the largest producers. Rubber is a strategic commodity, with global production exceeding 14 million tonnes annually, and it is crucial for the automotive industry, particularly for tires. The industry faces challenges such as price volatility, disease (e.g., South American leaf blight), and sustainability concerns.
Natural rubber exhibits high elasticity, resilience, and abrasion resistance, making it ideal for heavy-duty applications. Its low heat buildup and high tear strength are advantageous in tire manufacturing, especially for truck and aircraft tires. It is also used in medical gloves, condoms, and surgical tubing due to its biocompatibility and barrier properties. However, it is susceptible to degradation by ozone, oils, and heat, so it is often blended with synthetic rubbers or protected by additives. The latex is also used in adhesives, foam, and dipped goods. In addition, natural rubber is a renewable resource, and efforts are underway to develop alternative sources, such as guayule and Russian dandelion, to reduce dependence on Hevea.
Beyond Hevea, over 2,500 plant species produce latex, but only a few are commercially viable. Guayule (Parthenium argentatum), a shrub native to the southwestern US and Mexico, produces rubber in its bark and is being developed as an alternative for hypoallergenic applications. The Russian dandelion (Taraxacum koksaghyz) was used by the Soviet Union during World War II when supplies were cut off. Another obscure fact: the latex of the jelutong tree (Dyera costulata) is used for chewing gum, not rubber. In the 19th century, rubber was used to make waterproof clothing, but it had a tendency to melt in heat and become brittle in cold, a problem solved by vulcanization. The term 'rubber' itself comes from Joseph Priestley's observation that it could rub out pencil marks. Today, research focuses on improving yield through genetic engineering and on sustainable harvesting practices.
