The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences (Kungliga Vetenskapsakademien) is an independent, non-governmental learned society based in Stockholm, Sweden, founded in 1739. It is best known for selecting the Nobel laureates in physics, chemistry, and the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel, but it also promotes research in mathematics and the natural sciences through prizes, publications, and international cooperation.
The academy was founded on 2 June 1739 by six naturalists and economists, including the botanist Carl Linnaeus, the physicist and astronomer Anders Celsius, and the chemist and mineralogist Axel Fredrik Cronstedt. Its creation was inspired by the Royal Society of London and the Royal Academy of Sciences in Paris, but with a distinctly utilitarian mission: to apply science to practical problems such as mining, agriculture, and navigation. The academy's early publications, Handlingar (Proceedings), were among the first scientific journals in Scandinavia and helped disseminate new knowledge to a broad audience.
Initially, the academy operated without royal patronage, relying on membership fees and donations. It received its royal charter in 1741, and in 1828 King Charles XIV John granted it the status of an official institution. Over the centuries, the academy has maintained its independence, funding its activities through endowments and government grants while remaining free to set its own scientific agenda.

Election is a two-step process: candidates are nominated by existing members, and a majority vote in the relevant class and the academy as a whole is required for admission.
The academy's governing body is the Presidium, consisting of a President, Vice President, Secretary General, and Treasurer, elected for three-year terms. The academy also employs a professional secretariat that manages its day-to-day operations, including the Nobel Committees and the publication of scientific journals. Its headquarters, the Frescati campus in Stockholm, houses its offices, library, and meeting rooms, and is shared with Stockholm University.
Beyond the Nobel Prizes, the academy promotes scientific research through a variety of activities. It publishes several scientific journals, including Physica Scripta, Acta Mathematica, and Zoologica Scripta, which are respected in their fields. It also funds research expeditions, supports young scientists through fellowships, and organizes international symposia and conferences.
The academy maintains a significant library, the Nobel Library, which holds a comprehensive collection of scientific literature and archives related to the Nobel Prizes. It also operates the AlbaNova University Center in collaboration with Stockholm University and the KTH Royal Institute of Technology, which hosts research in physics, astronomy, and biotechnology. The academy's research stations, such as the Abisko Scientific Research Station in Swedish Lapland, provide facilities for environmental and climate studies.
One of the academy's lesser-known roles is its administration of the Polar Research Secretariat, which coordinates Swedish polar research expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctic. The academy also manages the Sweden Solar System, the world's largest scale model of the solar system, which spans the entire country.
The academy has a history of notable controversies, such as the 1926 Nobel Prize in Physics awarded to Jean Perrin, which was criticized by some for being premature, and the 1949 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine (not awarded by the academy) that sparked debates about the selection process. In 2018, the academy faced a crisis when a sexual misconduct scandal led to the postponement of the Nobel Prize in Literature, though that prize is awarded by the Swedish Academy, a separate body.
The academy also awards the Göran Gustafsson Prize to young researchers, and it has a tradition of electing honorary members, including royalty and distinguished public figures. Its archives contain valuable historical documents, including correspondence from Linnaeus and other founding members.
