Relief etching is a printmaking technique in which the image is etched into a metal plate so that the printing areas are raised, producing a relief print. Unlike intaglio processes, where ink is held in recessed lines, relief etching inks the surface of the plate, transferring the design to paper under light pressure. The method is closely associated with the artist William Blake, who developed it in the late 18th century as a means of combining text and image on a single plate. Relief etching allows for a direct, expressive line and is often used for book illustrations and experimental prints.
Relief etching begins with a polished metal plate, usually copper, coated with an acid-resistant ground. The artist draws the design through the ground with a needle, exposing the metal. The plate is then immersed in an acid bath, which bites the exposed areas, lowering them below the surface. The remaining ground protects the design, which stands in relief. After removing the ground, the plate is inked with a roller, and the raised surfaces transfer ink to paper under a press. This process differs from intaglio, where ink fills recessed lines and the plate surface is wiped clean.
Because the relief lines are printed from the surface, the plate can be printed alongside letterpress type, making it ideal for illustrated books. The acid strength and biting time control the depth of the recesses, affecting the relief height and print quality. Artists may also use multiple plates for color, as in the work of contemporary printmakers.
William Blake invented relief etching around 1788, calling it "woodcut on copper." He sought a method to print his poetry and illustrations together, avoiding the cost of conventional typesetting. Blake wrote his text and drew his images directly on the plate in an acid-resistant varnish, then etched away the background. This allowed him to produce illuminated books such as Songs of Innocence (1789) and The Marriage of Heaven and Hell (1790).
Blake's technique was revolutionary because it treated text and image as a unified design, breaking from the separation typical of letterpress. Relief etching has a rich history beyond Blake. In the 19th century, it was used for commercial illustration, particularly in scientific publications, because it could be printed alongside text. The technique also appeared in the work of the American artist and naturalist John James Audubon, who used a form of relief etching for some of his bird plates.
A curious edge case is the use of relief etching in currency printing, where raised lines create tactile features for the visually impaired. Additionally, some artists have used relief etching to print on unconventional materials like fabric and clay. The process is also employed in the production of microfluidic devices, where etched channels are used in laboratory-on-a-chip technology, demonstrating its versatility beyond art.
