Red hair, also known as ginger hair, is a rare human hair color occurring in roughly 1–2% of the world's population, resulting from a variant of the MC1R gene. It is most commonly associated with people of Northern or Northwestern European descent, particularly in Scotland and Ireland.
Red hair is caused by variants in the MC1R gene, located on chromosome 16, which encodes the melanocortin 1 receptor.
