Raritan River

The Raritan River is a major river in central New Jersey flowing into Raritan Bay. Its watershed drains much of the state’s central interior, linking the Appalachian Basin, Piedmont, coastal plain, and heavily urbanized communities before the river reaches the tidal bay near Perth Amboy.

Course and physical setting

The Raritan River begins at the confluence of the North Branch and South Branch in Branchburg Township, Somerset County, and flows generally eastward to Raritan Bay. The main stem passes near Somerville, Bound Brook, and New Brunswick before entering the tidal lower river near the bay. The North Branch rises in Morris County, while the South Branch extends westward toward Hunterdon County and the Musconetcong Mountains. Together, the branches and main stem form one of New Jersey’s largest drainage networks. The river’s approximately 121-mile length is commonly calculated by following the longer South Branch and the main stem rather than measuring only the central channel.1

Its watershed occupies about 1,100 square miles and includes portions of several physiographic regions. Headwater streams drain forested and agricultural uplands; farther east, the river crosses the Piedmont and broad floodplains before becoming tidal. This changing landscape helps explain the river’s varied water quality, habitats, and flood behavior.2

People, transportation, and water supply

The Raritan River has long served as a transportation corridor, a source of drinking water, and a focus of settlement. Indigenous Lenape communities used the river and its tributaries before colonial expansion; the name is generally associated with the Raritans, a Lenape group connected with the region. European settlements later grew around crossings, mills, canals, and market towns, including New Brunswick at the head of the tidal reach.

The Delaware and Raritan Canal, completed in the nineteenth century, connected the Delaware River with the Raritan and became an important commercial route before railroads and highways displaced most canal traffic. Today, the river remains central to public water supply. The Raritan Basin supplies water to a large share of New Jersey’s population, with reservoirs and water-treatment facilities connected to tributaries and the main stem.3 The river corridor also supports parks, trails, rowing, fishing, and other recreation, although access is uneven because industrial sites, rail lines, and private land occupy parts of the shoreline.

Ecology, pollution, and flood risk

Water quality in the Raritan River reflects both natural conditions and intense human development across the basin. Nutrients, sediment, pathogens, stormwater, legacy industrial contaminants, and combined sewer discharges have affected different reaches at different times. The lower river is also influenced by tides and by its connection to the brackish waters of Raritan Bay. Monitoring and restoration programs address wastewater treatment, nonpoint-source pollution, habitat loss, and the protection of drinking-water sources.

Flooding is a recurring hazard because communities and infrastructure occupy the river’s floodplain. Tropical storms, nor’easters, intense rainfall, and snowmelt can produce rapid rises, while coastal storm surge can affect the tidal reach. Hurricane Irene in 2011 and Hurricane Ida in 2021 demonstrated how rainfall-driven flooding can damage communities well inland from the coast. Wetlands, floodplain forests, reservoirs, and restored stream buffers can reduce some impacts, but development and climate-related changes in precipitation and sea level complicate long-term management.

Lesser-known aspects

The river is not a single uniform ecosystem: its upper reaches are freshwater streams, its middle reaches are shaped by dams and urban infrastructure, and its lower reaches are tidal. This distinction matters for fish passage, water-quality standards, boating, and flood forecasting. The watershed also contains the Sourland Mountain region, the Great Swamp watershed connection through tributaries, and extensive reservoirs whose primary purpose is water supply rather than recreation.

Several unusual management tensions occur within the basin. Dams can provide water storage or historic mill sites while blocking migratory fish, so removal or fish-passage projects may compete with preservation, hydropower, or water-supply objectives. The river’s name is also applied broadly in local geography: the principal river, its two major branches, the basin, and the tidal estuary are related but distinct units. At the mouth, the Raritan merges into a large estuarine system rather than ending at a sharply defined ocean shoreline; tidal exchange connects its water and wildlife to Raritan Bay and the wider New York–New Jersey Harbor estuary.
