Second World War radar

Radar, Gun Laying, Mk. I and Mk. II

Radar, Gun Laying, Mk. I and Mk. II were British ground-based fire-control radars developed for anti-aircraft artillery during the Second World War. They supplied continuously updated measurements of an aircraft’s range and bearing, while the later Mk. II also provided a workable electronic indication of elevation, allowing gun crews to engage targets more accurately, especially at night or through cloud.

Purpose and development

These sets were built to turn radar observations into firing data for anti-aircraft guns. The British air-defence system initially relied on Chain Home for early warning, but Chain Home was too large and comparatively coarse for directly directing a gun battery. Gun-laying radar addressed the shorter-range, higher-precision problem by tracking an aircraft and passing its position to a predictor and the gun directors.1 The Mk. I appeared as Britain expanded its radar-supported air defence before and during the early war. The Mk. II followed as an improved design intended to make tracking more reliable and to supply better information about target height. Neither designation described a single isolated weapon: each represented a radar fire-control system integrated with operators, communications, predictors, and anti-aircraft guns.

How the equipment worked

The sets measured a target’s position by transmitting radio pulses and interpreting their echoes. Echo delay provided range, while the direction of the receiving aerial gave bearing; the gun crew then combined those observations with the target’s motion and the ballistic characteristics of the weapon.2 The Mk. I was principally a range-and-bearing instrument, so height normally had to come from a separate height finder or visual estimate. The Mk. II introduced a more effective electronic method of determining elevation, reducing dependence on optical observation and making night engagements more practical. Operators had to distinguish the aircraft echo from ground clutter, interference, and changing propagation conditions. The radar therefore complemented rather than replaced human tracking, plotting, and command decisions.

Operational significance

Gun-laying radar mattered because it allowed anti-aircraft artillery to remain effective when visibility was poor. Searchlights, optical rangefinders, and the Kerrison Predictor were constrained by darkness, haze, cloud, and the rapid movement of aircraft, whereas radar could continue to supply observations without a visible target.3 The equipment was especially valuable in the defence of Britain and later in the protection of ports, cities, airfields, and field formations. Its measurements were not automatically a firing solution: prediction errors, mechanical response time, ammunition fuzes, and the target’s manoeuvres still affected results. The system’s importance lay in shortening the chain between detection and engagement and in giving commanders a common electronic picture of an approaching raid.

Lesser-known aspects

The Mk. I and Mk. II illustrate that wartime radar was a family of specialised instruments rather than one universal technology. Their usefulness depended on the complete battery installation, including aerials, displays, power equipment, telephone links, plotting personnel, and the guns themselves. They also occupied an intermediate position between strategic warning radars and later fully integrated automatic fire-control systems. As centimetric radar, improved predictors, and more sophisticated displays entered service, older gun-laying sets were increasingly limited by their frequency, accuracy, and manual workload.4 The designation “GL” consequently describes an operational function—gun laying—rather than a general-purpose surveillance role. The family’s legacy was procedural as much as technical: radar operators, predictors, directors, and gunners learned to work as one time-critical system.
