Radar, Anti-Aircraft No. 3 Mk. 7 was a British designation for a mobile, centimetric gun-laying radar developed for anti-aircraft artillery. It belonged to the generation of automatic-tracking radars that converted radar range and bearing into firing data for heavy guns, reducing dependence on optical visibility and manual prediction. Its significance lay less in long-range warning than in precise target tracking and engagement control, particularly against aircraft flying at night or through cloud.
Radar, Anti-Aircraft No. 3 Mk. 7 was designed to direct anti-aircraft fire rather than to provide general early warning. Its development reflects the rapid wartime shift from optical predictors to microwave radar, a change accelerated by the availability of the cavity magnetron and by the demands of night bombing. British gun-laying systems were assigned equipment numbers under the service designation system; the number and mark identify the equipment family and variant, not a civilian model name. The Mk. 7 belonged to the mature wartime and post-war class of mobile fire-control radars associated with heavy anti-aircraft batteries. British radar history is closely connected with the Telecommunications Research Establishment and with parallel American work on systems such as SCR-584.12
The set’s central task was to measure a target’s position continuously and pass usable data to the gun-positioning and prediction equipment. A rotating or scanning antenna searched the assigned sector; once a target was acquired, tracking circuits and operators maintained the target return while range and angular information were derived from the echoes. A fire-control computer or predictor then combined the changing measurements with the ballistic characteristics of the guns, producing bearing, elevation, and fuze information. This arrangement separated detection, tracking, prediction, and weapon laying, although the exact installation could vary between batteries and periods. Centimetric operation permitted relatively narrow beams and compact antennas, but performance still depended on target size, clutter, atmospheric conditions, and interference.1
The Mk. 7’s practical value was its ability to support engagements when optical instruments were degraded by darkness, cloud, smoke, or haze. Radar did not make anti-aircraft fire automatic in the modern sense: crews still had to establish the tactical picture, identify or assign targets, maintain equipment, and service the guns. Nevertheless, radar tracking improved the regularity and speed of fire-control data and helped batteries engage aircraft outside the conditions in which visual range-finding worked well. Such systems formed part of an integrated air-defence network that also included observer reports, warning radars, plotting rooms, predictors, searchlights, and communications. Their effectiveness therefore depended on organization and training as much as on transmitter power or antenna design.23
The designation is easily confused with British early-warning and height-finding equipment because British radar nomenclature used numbered families for many different roles. “Anti-Aircraft” in the title describes the tactical application, while “No. 3” and “Mk. 7” identify the equipment lineage and revision. The system should also not be treated as a synonym for every radar used with a 3.7-inch anti-aircraft battery: batteries could receive different combinations of radar, predictor, visual instruments, and communications equipment. Its historical importance lies in the institutional transition it represents—from radar as an experimental detection technology to radar as a routine component of artillery fire control. Later British and NATO gun-laying systems inherited this division between target tracking and ballistic prediction.14
The designation is preserved in British military-radar catalogues and technical histories; surviving records often describe the equipment by its official number rather than by a widely used nickname.
