Origins and society

The Protoss evolved on the jungle world of Aiur, where they developed a collective consciousness known as the Khala, which linked every Protoss mind through psionic energy. This unity ended the Aeon of Strife, a brutal civil war that nearly destroyed their civilization, and led to the establishment of a caste system: the Judicator caste governed, the Templar caste defended, and the Khalai caste built and created. The Khala also suppressed individual emotions and desires, fostering a disciplined, hierarchical society that prized honor and duty. The Protoss were among the most advanced races in the galaxy, with technology that included warp-based travel and energy shields, but their isolationism meant they rarely interfered with other species until the Zerg invasion forced them into the galactic stage.1

The Dark Templar schism

Not all Protoss accepted the Khala's unity; a minority rejected it as a suppression of individuality and were exiled from Aiur, becoming the Dark Templar. These outcasts settled on the barren world of Shakuras, where they developed a different psionic path, using the Void to cloak themselves and wield shadowy energies. The schism created a lasting rift between the main Protoss and the Dark Templar, who were viewed as heretics. However, during the Zerg invasion of Aiur, the Dark Templar returned to aid their kin, and their leader Zeratul played a crucial role in the war. The eventual fall of Aiur forced the Protoss to unite with the Dark Templar on Shakuras, blending their technologies and philosophies to survive.2

Gameplay and design

In the StarCraft games, the Protoss are designed as a high-tech, low-population race that relies on powerful units and advanced abilities. Their structures are warped in from orbit, and their units are built with psionic energy, making them more expensive but often more durable than their counterparts. Key units include the Zealot, a melee warrior with plasma shields; the Dragoon, a ranged walker; and the High Templar, who can unleash devastating psionic storms. The Protoss also have access to the Arbiter, a support ship that can cloak allied units and freeze enemies in time. Their design emphasizes tactical finesse over brute force, rewarding players who manage energy and positioning. The race's aesthetic, with its golden and blue color scheme, reflects their ancient, mystical culture.3

Lesser-known aspects

Beyond the main storyline, the Protoss have several obscure facets. The Nerazim, another name for the Dark Templar, are known for their unique architecture that blends organic and crystalline forms. The Purifiers are a faction of Protoss AI constructs created to serve as warriors, but they were deemed too independent and were decommissioned, later becoming a playable faction in StarCraft II. The Tal'darim are a fanatical offshoot that worships the fallen Xel'Naga, the ancient creators of the Protoss and Zerg. Additionally, the Protoss have a deep connection to the Khaydarin crystals, which are used in their technology and are said to resonate with their psionic energy. The Spear of Adun, a massive arkship, serves as a mobile base in StarCraft II, preserving Protoss culture after the loss of Aiur.
