Polybius is a lunar impact crater located in the southeastern part of the Moon's near side, within the rugged highlands north of the crater Maurolycus. It was named after the ancient Greek historian Polybius (c. 200–118 BC), who is best known for his Histories documenting the rise of the Roman Republic. The crater is notable for its relatively young age compared to its heavily battered surroundings, and for its distinctive dark floor, which has intrigued selenographers since the 19th century.
Polybius has a well-defined, roughly circular rim that is only moderately eroded, with a sharp edge on the northeast and a slightly terraced inner wall. The crater floor is relatively flat and is covered by a dark deposit of basaltic lava, a feature that is unusual for a crater of its size in the lunar highlands. This dark floor has been interpreted as evidence of volcanic activity that occurred after the crater's formation, possibly filling the interior with mare-like material. Another obscure detail is that the crater is named after Polybius, the Greek historian, but the name was officially adopted by the International Astronomical Union in 1935, long after the crater had been known by various designations.
