Plesiosaur

Plesiosaurs were a group of extinct marine reptiles belonging to the order Plesiosauria, which thrived from the Late Triassic to the end of the Cretaceous (about 203 to 66 million years ago). They are characterized by their broad, flat bodies, short tails, and two pairs of large, paddle-like flippers. Plesiosaurs were not dinosaurs, but rather distant relatives of modern lizards and snakes. They were among the dominant marine predators of the Mesozoic, occupying ecological niches similar to those of modern dolphins, seals, and whales. The group includes both long-necked forms (Plesiosauroidea) and short-necked, large-headed forms (Pliosauroidea).

Anatomy and locomotion

Plesiosaurs had a unique body plan: a compact, barrel-shaped torso, a short tail, and two pairs of large, elongated flippers. The fore and hind flippers were similar in size and shape, a feature that distinguishes them from ichthyosaurs and other marine reptiles. Their limb bones were heavy and stout, with a reduced number of finger and toe bones (hyperphalangy), which stiffened the flippers for powerful swimming.

Biomechanical studies suggest that plesiosaurs used a form of underwater flight, moving all four flippers in a coordinated, figure-eight pattern, similar to sea turtles and penguins. This provided high maneuverability and efficient cruising, though they were likely not fast sprinters. The long-necked forms, such as Elasmosaurus, had necks with up to 72 vertebrae, allowing them to strike at prey with a snake-like motion while keeping the body stable.1

Evolution and diversity

Plesiosaurs first appeared in the Late Triassic (Rhaetian) and diversified rapidly during the Jurassic and Cretaceous. They are divided into two main clades: Plesiosauroidea (long-necked, small-headed) and Pliosauroidea (short-necked, large-headed). Early forms, such as Thalassiodracon, were relatively small, but later pliosaurs like Kronosaurus reached lengths of 10–12 meters and had massive skulls with powerful jaws.

The group survived the Jurassic–Cretaceous boundary and continued to evolve, with the appearance of highly specialized forms like Styxosaurus and Hydrotherosaurus. The last plesiosaurs, such as Albertonectes, lived just before the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event, which wiped out all non-avian dinosaurs and many marine reptiles.2

Paleobiology and ecology

Plesiosaurs were active predators, feeding on fish, cephalopods (ammonites and belemnites), and other marine reptiles. Stomach contents and coprolites provide direct evidence of their diet. Some long-necked forms may have foraged on the seafloor, using their flexible necks to probe crevices, while large-headed pliosaurs were apex predators capable of tackling large prey.

Evidence from bone histology suggests that plesiosaurs were warm-blooded (endothermic), maintaining a high metabolic rate that supported active swimming and fast growth. They likely gave birth to live young, as indicated by a fossil of a pregnant Polycotylus with a single large fetus, a rare find that confirms viviparity in this group.3

Lesser-known aspects

One of the most famous plesiosaur fossils, the 'Monster of Aramberri', was initially misidentified as a dinosaur; it is now known to be a giant pliosaur, possibly exceeding 15 meters in length. Another notable specimen, Mauisaurus, was named after the Māori god Maui, reflecting the cultural heritage of New Zealand where it was found.

Plesiosaurs have also been linked to the Loch Ness Monster legend, with some cryptozoologists proposing that the creature is a surviving plesiosaur. However, there is no scientific evidence for this, and the idea is widely rejected. In 2017, a study of plesiosaur neck anatomy suggested that they could not lift their heads high above the water like a swan, contradicting earlier depictions. Additionally, some plesiosaurs had gastroliths (stomach stones) that may have aided digestion or buoyancy control.
