The Pittsburgh, Chartiers & Youghiogheny Railroad Bridge is a historic steel truss bridge in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, that carried the Pittsburgh, Chartiers & Youghiogheny Railroad across the Monongahela River. Built in 1904, it is a rare surviving example of a Pennsylvania (Petit) through truss design and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The bridge was constructed in 1904 for the Pittsburgh, Chartiers & Youghiogheny Railway, a short-line railroad that connected Pittsburgh's South Side to the coal fields of the Chartiers and Youghiogheny valleys.1 It was designed by the engineering firm of Waddell & Hedrick, known for their innovative truss designs, and built by the Phoenix Bridge Company. The bridge replaced an earlier wooden structure and was part of a larger expansion of rail infrastructure in the rapidly industrializing Pittsburgh region. It originally carried two tracks, but one was removed in the mid-20th century as traffic declined.
The bridge is a Pennsylvania (Petit) through truss, a subtype of the Pratt truss characterized by subdivided panels and additional diagonal members that reduce the unsupported length of compression members. It spans 1,200 feet (370 m) in total, with a main span of 300 feet (91 m) and approach spans of varying lengths. The trusses are riveted steel, and the deck originally supported heavy steam locomotives; later, diesel locomotives and, eventually, only light maintenance vehicles used the line. The bridge's design was considered advanced for its time, allowing longer spans with less material than earlier truss types.
The railroad operated freight and passenger services until the 1950s, when passenger service ceased and freight traffic dwindled. The line was absorbed into the Pittsburgh & Lake Erie Railroad in the 1960s, and later into the Conrail system in 1976.1 By the 1980s, the bridge was used only for occasional car storage and trackage rights. In 1999, the bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places, recognizing its engineering significance. However, it has been out of service since 2000, and its future remains uncertain, with proposals for conversion to a pedestrian and bicycle trail under consideration.
One lesser-known fact is that the bridge was one of the first in the region to use silicon steel, a material that offered higher strength than carbon steel, allowing for lighter trusses. Another is that the bridge's distinctive 'Pennsylvania' truss design was patented by the Pennsylvania Railroad in the 1870s, but this bridge is one of the few surviving examples built for a different railroad. The bridge also appears in early 20th-century postcards and photographs of the Pittsburgh skyline, and it was featured in a 1910 issue of 'Engineering News' as a model of economical design.2 Additionally, during the 1936 St. Patrick's Day flood, the bridge's elevation saved it from damage, while many other river structures were destroyed.
