Pieridae is a family of butterflies commonly known as whites and yellows, although its members also include sulphurs, marbles, orangetips, and brimstones. The family is distributed across most of the world and is especially diverse in tropical regions, where many species use plants in the mustard and bean families as larval food.
Pieridae is a large butterfly family in the order Lepidoptera, recognized chiefly by its often white, yellow, orange, or greenish wing coloration. The family contains roughly 1,100 described species, though its limits and internal classification have changed as molecular studies have revised relationships among lineages.1 Common English names include whites, yellows, sulphurs, brimstones, marbles, and orangetips.
Traditional classifications commonly divide Pieridae into the subfamilies Dismorphiinae, Pierinae, Coliadinae, and Pseudopontiinae. Dismorphiinae includes several Neotropical mimetic forms, while Pierinae contains many whites and orangetips; Coliadinae includes sulphurs and allied yellow butterflies. These groupings are useful for identification, but evolutionary studies show that some familiar genera and tribes have undergone repeated taxonomic reassessment.2
Pierid adults are medium-sized butterflies with six functional legs, clubbed antennae, and broad wings whose patterns often combine dark margins with pale or vivid ground colors. Many species have ultraviolet-reflective scales or sex-specific wing markings that are difficult for human observers to see but influence mate recognition. The underside of the wings is frequently mottled, providing camouflage when the butterfly rests with its wings closed.
Females lay eggs on particular host plants, and the caterpillars usually feed openly on leaves before pupating as a chrysalis attached by a silk girdle and a supporting pad. Species using mustard-family plants may sequester defensive chemicals or tolerate them physiologically, while other pierids specialize on legumes or caper relatives. Adults visit flowers for nectar, but some also obtain minerals from damp soil, animal droppings, or carrion in a behavior called mud-puddling.3
Pieridae occurs on every continent except Antarctica, with species inhabiting deserts, grasslands, forests, alpine zones, islands, and agricultural landscapes. The family is particularly conspicuous in temperate regions because several whites and sulphurs remain active over long seasons and can migrate or disperse widely. The cabbage white, for example, has expanded beyond its original Eurasian range and is now established in many other parts of the world.4
Pierids occupy several positions in food webs. Their eggs and caterpillars are attacked by parasitoid wasps and flies, while adults are preyed upon by birds, spiders, dragonflies, and other insectivores. Some species participate in Batesian or Müllerian mimicry complexes, particularly in the Neotropics, where their wing patterns resemble those of distasteful butterflies. Host-plant availability, temperature, drought, pesticides, and changing land use all influence local abundance.
Pieridae contains some of the best-known examples of butterfly sexual dimorphism and seasonal polyphenism. In several Colias species, females may occur in a darker, so-called heterochrome form that resembles the male less closely than the typical female. In other species, temperature and photoperiod during development alter wing coloration, body size, or the timing of adult emergence.
The family also has unusual biogeographic and evolutionary cases. Certain island pierids have evolved distinctive forms after isolation, while the orange-and-white patterns of some Dismorphiinae resemble unrelated Ithomiini and other chemically defended butterflies. Pierid caterpillars can be agricultural pests when they feed on cabbage, broccoli, mustard, or related crops, yet adults are important pollinators and their presence can indicate the availability of flowering plants and suitable larval habitat. Conservation therefore depends less on protecting adults alone than on retaining host plants and minimizing broad-spectrum insecticide use.3
