Photography

Photography is the art and practice of creating images by recording light, usually with a camera and a light-sensitive surface or electronic sensor. It combines optical design, chemistry or electronics, timing, composition, and later image processing. Photographs can function as artworks, scientific records, documents, evidence, personal memories, or commercial media; their meaning depends both on how they were made and how they are circulated.

Origins and early processes

Photography emerged in the 1820s from the combination of the camera obscura with light-sensitive chemistry. Nicéphore Niépce produced the earliest surviving permanent camera photograph, probably in 1826 or 1827, using a pewter plate coated with bitumen that hardened under light.1 Louis Daguerre refined the process into the daguerreotype, announced publicly in 1839; it produced a highly detailed image on silver-plated copper but created only one original. William Henry Fox Talbot developed the paper-based calotype, whose negative could generate multiple positive prints.2

Early exposures could require minutes or hours, making posed portraits difficult. Improvements in lenses, sensitized materials, and processing progressively reduced exposure times. The wet-collodion process of the 1850s combined sharp detail with reproducible glass negatives, although photographers had to coat, expose, and develop plates while they remained wet.

Materials, cameras, and visual language

Photographic images are shaped by both the recording apparatus and the choices made before and after exposure. A lens focuses light; an aperture controls the opening through which it passes; and a shutter controls duration. Together with the sensitivity of the recording material, these variables determine exposure, depth of field, motion rendering, and noise or grain. In film photography, silver-halide crystals form a latent image that chemical development makes visible; printing transfers that image to paper.

Photography developed distinctive conventions including portraiture, landscape, documentary work, still life, fashion, scientific imaging, and photojournalism. Composition, viewpoint, lighting, cropping, and sequencing can turn a mechanically recorded scene into an expressive visual argument. Photographers such as Julia Margaret Cameron, Alfred Stieglitz, and August Sander helped establish photography as a serious medium while pursuing markedly different approaches to focus, modernity, and social description.3

Digital transformation and contemporary practice

Digital photography replaces a chemical image-forming surface with an electronic sensor that converts incoming photons into electrical signals. Most digital cameras use arrays of photosites, commonly based on CCD or CMOS technology, followed by analog-to-digital conversion and computational processing. A color image is usually reconstructed from measurements made through color filters, so the displayed photograph is both a record of light and a result of interpretation by software.

Digital capture lowered the cost of making and distributing images, encouraged rapid experimentation, and connected cameras to phones, networks, and social platforms. It also made editing, metadata management, computational noise reduction, high-dynamic-range merging, and automated recognition ordinary parts of photographic practice. Museums and archives distinguish an original file, its embedded metadata, and later derivatives because each can carry different evidentiary and preservation value.4

Lesser-known aspects

Photography has long served purposes beyond portraiture and art, including astronomy, microscopy, cartography, medicine, criminal investigation, anthropology, and the measurement of motion. Early photographers made composite images, stereographs, photograms, and panoramic views; a camera was not always required, since a photogram records objects placed directly on light-sensitive material. Stereoscopic photographs create an impression of depth when viewed as paired images, while infrared and ultraviolet techniques reveal information outside ordinary human vision.

Photographs are not transparent copies of reality: lenses can distort, emulsions and sensors have unequal spectral responses, and choices about framing or development exclude as much as they show. Archives therefore preserve captions, provenance, negatives or original files, and contextual records alongside prints. Ethical questions become especially acute in documentary and scientific photography, where consent, privacy, manipulation, colonial histories, and the difference between illustration and evidence affect how an image should be interpreted.56
