Paul J. Crutzen

Paul J. Crutzen (1933–2021) was a Dutch atmospheric chemist who won the 1995 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work on the chemical mechanisms that deplete the ozone layer. He is also credited with coining the term Anthropocene to describe the current geological epoch defined by human impact on Earth systems.

Early life and career

Crutzen was born in Amsterdam on 3 December 1933. He studied engineering at a technical school and worked as a bridge constructor before turning to science. In 1959 he married Terttu Soininen, a Finnish computer programmer, and moved to Sweden, where he began programming at Stockholm University. There he encountered meteorology and atmospheric chemistry, earning a PhD in 1973. His early work on nitrogen oxides in the stratosphere laid the foundation for his later Nobel-winning research.1

Ozone depletion research

In 1970, Crutzen showed that nitrogen oxides (NOx) from natural and anthropogenic sources catalyze the destruction of stratospheric ozone. This was the first major chemical explanation for ozone loss, preceding the chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) hypothesis. He later contributed to understanding the role of hydroxyl radicals in tropospheric chemistry and the Antarctic ozone hole. His work directly influenced the Montreal Protocol, the international treaty that phased out ozone-depleting substances.2

Anthropocene and later work

In 2000, Crutzen and Eugene Stoermer proposed the term 'Anthropocene' to mark the end of the Holocene, citing human-driven changes to the carbon cycle, biodiversity, and climate. Crutzen later explored nuclear winter, the environmental effects of a large-scale nuclear war, and geoengineering concepts like stratospheric sulfur injection. He remained active in climate research until his death in 2021, advocating for serious consideration of climate intervention.

Lesser-known aspects

Crutzen's early career as a bridge builder gave him a practical mindset that he applied to complex systems. He was a strong advocate for the 'nuclear winter' hypothesis, which he developed with John Birks in 1982, predicting severe cooling from soot in the stratosphere. He also coined the term 'chemical weather' to describe atmospheric composition changes. Crutzen was known for his humility, often downplaying his Nobel Prize, and he actively supported young scientists from developing countries.
