Pankaj Tripathi

Pankaj Tripathi was born in 1976 in a small village in Gopalganj district, Bihar, into a farming family. He initially pursued a degree in hotel management but left it to join the National School of Drama in Delhi, where he trained in theatre. His early career included work in Hindi theatre and small roles in television serials, which honed his craft before he moved to Mumbai.

Tripathi's theatre background gave him a strong foundation in character study, which later became his hallmark. He has often credited his rural upbringing for the authenticity he brings to roles rooted in small-town India.

Tripathi's film debut came with a minor role in the 2004 film Run, but his breakthrough was in Anurag Kashyap's Gangs of Wasseypur (2012), where he played the memorable Sultan Qureshi. He followed with notable roles in films like Masaan (2015), Nil Battey Sannata (2016), and Newton (2017), which earned him critical acclaim and a National Film Award special mention.

In the streaming era, Tripathi became a household name with the Amazon Prime series Mirzapur (2018–present), playing the ruthless yet witty gangster Kaleen Bhaiya. He has also appeared in Sacred Games, Criminal Justice, and the film Ludo (2020), showcasing his range from comedy to intense drama.

Tripathi is known for his naturalistic acting, often improvising dialogues with a distinct Bihari accent. He avoids typecasting by alternating between villainous, comic, and sympathetic roles, making him one of the most sought-after character actors in Indian cinema.

His performances have earned him several awards, including the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actor for Newton and a National Film Award special mention. He has also been praised for his ability to elevate even small roles, as seen in films like Stree (2018) and Gunjan Saxena (2020).

Before acting, Tripathi worked as a hotel management trainee and even ran a small eatery. He has been a vocal advocate for regional cinema, often speaking about the lack of representation of Bihari culture in mainstream media.

Tripathi is also a trained classical singer and has performed in theatre festivals internationally. He has a keen interest in writing and has contributed essays on acting and rural life to Indian publications. His philanthropic work includes supporting education for underprivileged children in his native village.
