Optane is built on 3D XPoint, a non-volatile memory technology co-developed by Intel and Micron, which uses a phase-change material that switches between crystalline and amorphous states to store data. Unlike NAND flash, 3D XPoint is byte-addressable and does not require erase-before-write, enabling faster read and write operations. The memory cell is a stack of a selector and storage element, arranged in a cross-point grid, allowing for high density and low cost per bit compared to DRAM. Intel's Optane SSDs use a proprietary controller that manages wear leveling and error correction, while Optane persistent memory modules (e.g., Optane DC Persistent Memory) operate on the DDR4 bus, offering capacities up to 512 GB per module. In the data center, Optane DC SSDs (P4800X, P5800X) were used for caching, logging, and metadata storage, while Optane DC Persistent Memory (DCPMM) enabled large-capacity memory pools and persistent memory programming models. Market history and discontinuation

Intel announced 3D XPoint in 2015 and launched the first Optane SSDs in 2017, followed by Optane Memory modules in 2017 and DCPMM in 2019. The technology was initially hailed as a breakthrough, but adoption was limited by high cost and competition from faster NAND (e.g., NVMe SSDs) and DRAM. In 2021, Intel sold its NAND and SSD business to SK Hynix, but retained Optane. However, in 2022, Intel announced the discontinuation of Optane products, citing poor financial returns and a shift in strategy. The last products were shipped in 2025, and Intel has ceased development. Micron, the co-developer, had already exited 3D XPoint in 2021, focusing on DRAM and NAND. The discontinuation left a gap in the market for high-endurance persistent memory, but no direct successor has emerged.

Optane's development involved a unique collaboration between Intel and Micron, with the two companies sharing a fab in Lehi, Utah, but later diverging due to strategic differences.
