Ophiocordyceps was erected in 2007 by Sung et al. after molecular phylogenetic analyses revealed that the traditional genus Cordyceps was polyphyletic. The genus is placed in the family Ophiocordycipitaceae, order Hypocreales, class Sordariomycetes. Species are characterized by darkly pigmented, tough stromata and filiform ascospores that break into part-spores. The type species is Ophiocordyceps blattae, described from cockroach hosts. Molecular dating suggests the genus diversified during the Cretaceous, coinciding with the radiation of social insects. Recent phylogenomic studies have resolved many cryptic species, particularly within the O. unilateralis complex, which includes at least 20 distinct lineages that are host-specific to different ant species.

Life cycle and host manipulation

Ophiocordyceps species typically infect insects through cuticular penetration, then proliferate in the hemocoel, consuming non-vital tissues while preserving the host's nervous system. As the infection progresses, the fungus alters host behavior, a phenomenon best documented in O. unilateralis, which induces infected carpenter ants to leave their canopy nests and descend to a microhabitat with optimal temperature and humidity for fungal growth. The ant then bites into a leaf vein with a characteristic "death grip" and dies, after which the fungus erupts from the head to produce a stalked stroma. Ecology and distribution
