Nuclear submarine

A nuclear submarine is a submarine powered by a nuclear reactor, enabling it to operate submerged for months without surfacing or refueling. The first nuclear submarine, USS Nautilus, was launched in 1954, and nuclear propulsion soon became the standard for major navies, underpinning strategic deterrence and long-range power projection.1

Propulsion and design

The heart of a nuclear submarine is a pressurized water reactor (PWR) that heats water to produce steam, driving turbines connected to the propeller shaft. This system eliminates the need for atmospheric oxygen, allowing indefinite submerged endurance limited only by food and crew stamina.1 The reactor is shielded by lead and water, and the hull is typically made of high-strength steel or titanium for deep diving. Modern designs incorporate pump-jet propulsors to reduce noise, a critical factor for stealth.

Strategic role and history

Nuclear submarines became the cornerstone of nuclear deterrence during the Cold War, carrying ballistic missiles (SSBNs) that could survive a first strike. The US Navy's Polaris program and the Soviet Union's Yankee class exemplified this role. Attack submarines (SSNs) were developed for anti-ship and anti-submarine warfare, as well as intelligence gathering. The 1982 Falklands War highlighted the strategic value of SSNs, with HMS Conqueror sinking the Argentine cruiser General Belgrano.2

Safety and environmental concerns

Nuclear submarines pose unique safety and environmental risks. Reactor accidents, though rare, can lead to radioactive contamination; the 1963 loss of USS Thresher and the 2000 Kursk disaster are notable tragedies. Decommissioning involves defueling and dismantling, with Russia and the US facing challenges in disposing of reactor compartments. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) oversees safeguards to prevent diversion of nuclear materials.3

Lesser-known aspects

Beyond military roles, nuclear submarines have supported scientific research, including under-ice exploration in the Arctic. The US Navy's SCICEX program used submarines to map the ocean floor and study polar oceanography. A niche fact: the Soviet Union's Typhoon-class submarines, the largest ever built, were designed to break through thick Arctic ice to launch missiles. Additionally, some submarines have been converted for special operations, such as the US Navy's USS Jimmy Carter, modified to tap undersea cables.4
