Norwegian Sea

The Norwegian Sea is a marginal sea of the Atlantic Ocean between Norway, Iceland, and the Faroe Islands. It forms a transition between the North Atlantic and the Greenland Sea, and its comparatively warm waters help moderate the climate of coastal northern Europe.

Geography and boundaries

The Norwegian Sea occupies the oceanic space west of mainland Norway and between Iceland, Jan Mayen, and the Faroe Islands. Its boundaries are conventionally defined by surrounding island chains, submarine ridges, and the Norwegian coast, although exact limits vary among atlases and marine authorities.1 The sea connects southward with the North Sea through passages around the Shetland and Faroe Islands, westward with the Iceland Basin, and northward with the Greenland Sea across the Jan Mayen area.

Unlike the shallow North Sea, much of the Norwegian Sea consists of deep oceanic basins separated by ridges. The Norwegian continental margin includes the deep Norwegian Channel along the coast, while the Iceland–Faroe Ridge and Jan Mayen Ridge act as partial geological and oceanographic thresholds. These features influence water exchange, fisheries, sediment movement, and the distribution of marine organisms.

Circulation and climate

The Norwegian Sea is a major pathway for warm Atlantic water entering the Nordic seas. The Norwegian Atlantic Current, a branch of the North Atlantic Current, carries relatively warm and saline water northward along the Norwegian margin, while colder water returns at depth or through neighboring basins.2 This circulation contributes to the relatively mild, ice-free conditions of many Norwegian coastal waters compared with locations at similar latitudes.

Cooling, evaporation, and mixing increase the density of surface waters in the Nordic seas. Some of this dense water contributes to the broader Atlantic overturning circulation, although the processes are distributed among the Norwegian, Greenland, and Iceland seas rather than confined to one basin.3 Seasonal storms, strong fronts, and winter convection make the region important for climate observation and marine forecasting.

Ecosystems and human use

The Norwegian Sea supports productive ecosystems shaped by Atlantic inflow, seasonal light, and nutrient-rich mixing. Phytoplankton blooms support zooplankton such as copepods, which in turn feed herring, mackerel, blue whiting, seabirds, and marine mammals. Commercial fisheries have long targeted species including Norwegian spring-spawning herring, mackerel, cod, and blue whiting, although stocks cross national boundaries and require international management.4

Shipping, petroleum activity, aquaculture near the Norwegian coast, and offshore energy add economic importance and environmental pressure. The sea is also a habitat for deep-water corals, including Lophelia pertusa, which create complex structures vulnerable to bottom trawling and other seabed disturbance.5 Monitoring therefore combines fisheries science, pollution assessment, seabird surveys, and habitat mapping.

Lesser-known aspects

The Norwegian Sea is not simply a warm extension of the Atlantic: it contains sharp boundaries where Atlantic, Arctic, and coastal waters meet. These fronts can concentrate plankton and fish, making relatively narrow zones disproportionately important to predators and fisheries.4 Its seabed also preserves evidence of repeated glaciations, including sediment fans and submarine channels formed when ice sheets reached the continental margin.

Jan Mayen, a remote volcanic island on the sea’s northwestern side, marks an active part of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge system and helps define the region’s unusual tectonic setting. The Norwegian Sea has additionally served as a natural laboratory for studying ocean acidification, deoxygenation, and changes in Atlantic inflow. Its waters are connected to global climate processes, so local observations can reveal changes extending far beyond Scandinavia.3
