Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland occupies about 17% of the island of Ireland, with a landscape of rolling hills, lakes, and a rugged coastline. The region is separated from Great Britain by the North Channel and shares a 499 km land border with the Republic of Ireland to the south and west. The largest lake in the UK, Lough Neagh, lies in the center of Northern Ireland, and the Giant's Causeway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is on the north coast. The population is predominantly urban, with Belfast and Derry (also called Londonderry) being the main cities. According to the 2021 census, about 45% of the population identify as Catholic and 43% as Protestant, reflecting the historical divide. The region has a younger population than the UK average, with a higher birth rate.

The creation of Northern Ireland in 1921 was a result of the partition of Ireland, with six of the nine counties of Ulster forming a Protestant-majority state that remained in the UK. From the 1960s to the 1990s, the region was plagued by the Troubles, a violent conflict between unionists (mostly Protestant) who wanted to remain in the UK and nationalists (mostly Catholic) who sought a united Ireland. The Good Friday Agreement of 1998, signed by the British and Irish governments and most political parties, ended large-scale violence and established a devolved Northern Ireland Assembly with mandatory power-sharing between unionist and nationalist parties. The Assembly has been suspended at times due to disputes, most recently from 2022 to 2024 over post-Brexit trade arrangements. Northern Ireland elects members to the UK Parliament and is represented in the House of Commons.

Northern Ireland has a mixed economy, with traditional industries such as shipbuilding and linen declining in the 20th century, replaced by services, technology, and agri-food. Belfast's Harland and Wolff shipyard, famous for building the RMS Titanic, now focuses on renewable energy and engineering. The region has a growing film and television industry, with HBO's Game of Thrones filmed at various locations, boosting tourism. Culturally, Northern Ireland has a rich literary heritage, including Nobel laureates Seamus Heaney and Samuel Beckett (though Beckett was born in Dublin, he spent time in the north). The Irish language has official recognition, and Ulster Scots is also protected under the Good Friday Agreement. The region has its own distinct dialect, music, and sports, including Gaelic games and rugby.

Beyond the headline facts, Northern Ireland has several lesser-known dimensions. The region has a unique legal system, with a separate court structure and laws that differ from England and Wales. The Giant's Causeway is not just a tourist site; it is a geological formation of about 40,000 basalt columns created by volcanic activity 60 million years ago. The world's oldest known whiskey distillery, Bushmills, received a license in 1608, though its current buildings date from the 18th century. Northern Ireland is also home to the world's oldest operational gasworks, in Carrickfergus, which began production in 1855. The region has a significant diaspora, with many people of Northern Irish descent in the United States, Canada, and Australia. The peace walls in Belfast, built to separate communities, still stand, and some are now tourist attractions, while others are being removed as part of the peace process.
