New Horizons (Flyleaf album)

New Horizons was recorded in 2012 at The Village Studios in Los Angeles, with producer Howard Benson, who had previously worked with the band on their 2009 album Memento Mori. The album was written during a period of personal and professional transition for the band, with Lacey Sturm citing spiritual and emotional struggles as influences on the lyrics. The recording process was notably collaborative, with the band experimenting with new instrumentation, including piano-driven ballads and layered vocal harmonies, a departure from their earlier post-grunge sound.

The album's sound is characterized by a shift toward alternative rock and pop-rock, with reduced heavy guitar riffs and a greater emphasis on melody and atmosphere. Critics noted the influence of bands like Paramore and Evanescence, while Sturm's lyrics explored themes of hope, redemption, and personal growth, often drawing on her Christian faith. The title track, "New Horizons," serves as an anthem of resilience, while songs like "Call You Out" and "Fire Fire" retain a harder edge, balancing the album's overall melodic direction.

New Horizons received mixed-to-positive reviews from music critics, with praise for Sturm's vocal performance and the band's musical evolution, but some criticism for a lack of sonic consistency. It debuted at number 12 on the Billboard 200, selling around 27,000 copies in its first week, and also charted on the Top Rock Albums and Top Christian Albums charts. The album's only single, "New Horizons," peaked at number 18 on the Billboard Hot Christian Songs chart. Following the album's release, the band toured extensively, but in October 2012, Sturm announced her departure to focus on family, making the album a poignant farewell.

Despite being a major release, New Horizons is often overlooked in discussions of Flyleaf's discography. The album's deluxe edition included acoustic versions of several tracks, showcasing the band's unplugged side. Notably, the album was the last to feature original guitarist Sameer Bhattacharya, who left the band in 2016. A lesser-known fact is that the album's cover art, featuring a lone tree against a vast sky, was designed by the band's longtime collaborator, artist Tim Tadder, and was intended to symbolize new beginnings. Additionally, the track "Well of Lies" was originally written for the band's earlier album, but was reworked for this release, and the song "Broken Wings" was included in the soundtrack of the 2013 film The Host.
