New Horizons

New Horizons is a NASA space probe launched on January 19, 2006, on a mission to study Pluto, its moons, and the Kuiper Belt. It performed the first flyby of Pluto on July 14, 2015, returning unprecedented images and data, and later flew by the Kuiper Belt object Arrokoth on January 1, 2019. The spacecraft continues to operate, exploring the outer solar system.

Mission overview and design

New Horizons was designed and built by the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) and the Southwest Research Institute (SwRI), with principal investigator Alan Stern leading the mission. Launched atop an Atlas V rocket, it was the fastest spacecraft ever launched at the time, reaching a speed of about 16.26 km/s relative to Earth. The spacecraft is powered by a radioisotope thermoelectric generator (RTG) because solar power is impractical at such great distances. Its scientific payload includes instruments for imaging, spectroscopy, and particle measurements, such as the Long Range Reconnaissance Imager (LORRI) and the Ralph telescope. The mission was part of NASA's New Frontiers program, a series of medium-cost planetary missions.

Pluto flyby and discoveries

On July 14, 2015, New Horizons made its closest approach to Pluto, coming within 12,500 km of the surface. The flyby revealed a surprisingly complex world with a heart-shaped nitrogen ice plain called Sputnik Planitia, water-ice mountains as tall as the Rockies, and evidence of recent geological activity. The spacecraft also studied Pluto's largest moon, Charon, discovering a canyon system and a dark polar region. Data from the encounter showed that Pluto's atmosphere is hazy and extends far into space, with escaping nitrogen. The mission transformed Pluto from a distant dot into a dynamic world, reshaping planetary science.

Arrokoth and the Kuiper Belt

After the Pluto flyby, New Horizons was retargeted to fly by a small Kuiper Belt object, later named Arrokoth (formerly 2014 MU69). On January 1, 2019, it performed the most distant flyby in history, at about 6.6 billion km from Earth. Arrokoth turned out to be a contact binary, two lobes joined together, resembling a snowman. This object is a pristine remnant from the early solar system, offering clues about planetesimal formation. The spacecraft continues to observe other Kuiper Belt objects from afar, and it is expected to remain operational until the late 2030s, potentially providing more data on the outer solar system.

Lesser-known aspects

New Horizons carries a small amount of the cremated remains of Clyde Tombaugh, the discoverer of Pluto, honoring his legacy. The spacecraft also carries a U.S. postage stamp from 1991 that famously labeled Pluto 'Not Yet Explored,' which was later canceled with a stamp showing the probe. The mission's encounter with Pluto was timed to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the first Mariner flyby of Mars. Additionally, the spacecraft's trajectory was chosen to allow a possible flyby of a Kuiper Belt object, and it has been used to study the background light of the universe, providing constraints on dark matter. The team also conducted a citizen science campaign to name features on Pluto, such as the 'Tombaugh Regio'.
