The Neolithic Revolution was the transition from hunting and gathering to agriculture and settled societies during the Neolithic. Beginning independently in several regions after about 10,000 BCE, it involved domestication of plants and animals, permanent or semi-permanent settlements, new technologies, and major changes in population, labor, diet, and social organization.1
The Neolithic Revolution describes a broad economic and social transformation rather than a single event. In the Fertile Crescent, communities began cultivating cereals and legumes and managing animals during the early Holocene, while comparable developments later arose in China, New Guinea, Africa, the Andes, and Mesoamerica.1 The term “revolution” refers to the long-term consequences of these changes, not necessarily to a rapid process. Some groups farmed while continuing to hunt, fish, or gather wild foods, and the boundaries between mobile and settled life remained fluid for millennia.
Archaeological evidence shows that domestication involved both human selection and ecological change. Plants with traits such as non-shattering seed heads became more common in cultivated fields, while animals were gradually altered through controlled breeding and management.
Agriculture enabled communities to produce storable surpluses, but it did not automatically provide better nutrition or greater leisure. Early farmers commonly relied on a narrower range of staple foods than foragers, and skeletal evidence from some regions indicates increased infectious disease, dental problems, and physical stress after settlement. Population nevertheless expanded because food production could support more people in favorable environments.
Permanent architecture, storage facilities, grinding tools, pottery, and field systems became increasingly common. Sites such as Jericho and Çatalhöyük illustrate the diversity of early settled life, from villages with communal or defensive features to densely built settlements whose inhabitants combined cultivation, herding, craft production, and exchange.2 Not every settlement was an agricultural village: some large early sites may have drawn seasonal populations or depended substantially on wild resources.
The shift to food production reorganized labor, property, family life, and relations among communities. Stored crops and herds could be inherited, exchanged, or raided, encouraging new forms of ownership and inequality, although social differences varied greatly between regions and periods. Larger populations also created conditions for craft specialization, long-distance exchange, ritual institutions, and eventually more hierarchical political organizations.
Farming altered landscapes through forest clearance, irrigation, grazing, burning, and soil cultivation. These practices could increase productivity but also cause erosion, salinization, habitat loss, and dependence on vulnerable crops. Ancient DNA and archaeological research show that mobility did not disappear: farmers, herders, and hunter-gatherers interacted, intermarried, competed, and sometimes replaced one another across Eurasia.3 The result was a mosaic of lifeways rather than a universal sequence followed everywhere.
The earliest cultivation often preceded full domestication, and people sometimes managed wild stands without living permanently in villages. In the Levant, intensified harvesting and cultivation developed alongside continued use of wild plants and animals; in East Asia, rice and millet traditions followed distinct regional pathways.1 Independent domestication also occurred far from the Near East, including maize in Mesoamerica, potatoes and other crops in the Andes, and sorghum and related crops in Africa.
Some early agricultural societies retained substantial aquatic economies, while others practiced pastoralism with limited crop production. Pottery and weaving were not universal markers of the transition, and monumental construction could precede or coexist with intensive farming. The Neolithic therefore represents multiple experiments in managing landscapes, food, labor, and social relationships. Its legacy includes the foundations of urbanization and states, but also longstanding debates over whether farming was driven chiefly by population pressure, climate change, social competition, or opportunities created by local environments.4
Dates and pathways varied substantially by region; “Neolithic Revolution” is a conventional umbrella term for several related transitions rather than a single worldwide episode.
