N700S series

The N700S series is a Japanese high-speed Shinkansen train type operated by Central Japan Railway Company (JR Central) and West Japan Railway Company (JR West) on the Tōkaidō and San'yō Shinkansen lines. Introduced in 2020, it is the latest evolution of the N700 family, featuring a lighter, more energy-efficient design and enhanced safety systems. The 'S' stands for 'Supreme'.

Design and technology

The N700S series features a completely redesigned underfloor layout, with a more compact traction system using silicon carbide (SiC) power semiconductors, reducing weight by about 20 tonnes compared to earlier N700 series trainsets. The aerodynamic nose, extended to 15.4 metres, reduces tunnel boom and improves energy efficiency. The train uses a new active suspension system and lightweight aluminium alloy body, contributing to a 7% reduction in energy consumption.1 The N700S is also the first Shinkansen to offer a battery-powered self-propulsion system for emergency low-speed operation, allowing it to move to the nearest station in the event of a power failure.2

Operational history

The first N700S trainset was delivered in 2019 and entered revenue service on 1 July 2020, initially on the Tōkaidō Shinkansen.3 By 2023, JR Central had introduced 19 sixteen-car sets, and JR West began operating N700S sets on the San'yō Shinkansen in 2022. The type is expected to replace the older N700 series and eventually the 700 series, with a total of 40 sets planned by 2026. The N700S has also been exported to Taiwan as the Taiwan High Speed Rail 2000 series, marking the first export of a Japanese Shinkansen train design.4

Passenger amenities and services

Passenger accommodation includes upgraded seating with improved legroom and power outlets at every seat. The N700S features enhanced Wi-Fi connectivity and a new infotainment system, with larger luggage storage areas. The train also offers a new 'Green Car' (first class) with leather seats and a quieter ride. Accessibility improvements include wider doors and a new universal access toilet. The N700S is designed to be quieter and more comfortable, with improved air conditioning and lighting.

Lesser-known aspects

The N700S was the first Shinkansen to use a lithium-ion battery system for emergency propulsion, a feature developed in response to the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami.2 The train's nose shape was refined through extensive computer simulation and wind tunnel testing, achieving a 30% reduction in micro-pressure waves at tunnel entrances. The N700S also introduced a new 'self-diagnosis' system that monitors the condition of components in real time, reducing maintenance costs. In 2020, the N700S set a world speed record for a commercial train with a maximum speed of 360 km/h during test runs. The design has been adapted for the Taiwan High Speed Rail, with modifications for tropical climates and different gauge.
