Mount Tambora sits on the Sanggar Peninsula of Sumbawa, within the Sunda Arc, where the Indo-Australian Plate subducts beneath the Eurasian Plate. The volcano is a stratovolcano composed of alternating layers of lava, ash, and volcanic debris. Before 1815, it had a summit elevation of about 4,300 meters, making it one of the highest peaks in the Indonesian archipelago.
