Morganite is a pink to orange-pink variety of the mineral beryl, valued as a gemstone. Its color is typically caused by trace amounts of manganese, and it is often heat-treated to enhance its hue. Morganite was first identified in 1910 in Madagascar and named after the American financier and collector J.P. Morgan.
Morganite is a member of the beryl family, with the chemical formula Be3Al2Si6O18. The pink color is attributed to trace amounts of manganese (Mn2+) substituting for aluminum in the crystal structure.1 The intensity of color can vary from very light pink to a deeper salmon or peach tone, often influenced by cesium and rubidium impurities. Natural morganite is frequently pale; heat treatment at around 400–450 °C can remove yellow or orange components, producing a more saturated pink.2 Unlike emerald, morganite typically has few inclusions, and its clarity is often excellent.
Morganite was first described in 1910 by George F. Kunz, who named it in honor of J.P. Morgan, a prominent banker and gem collector.3 The type locality is the Anjanabonoina pegmatite in Madagascar, where large, gem-quality crystals were found. In 1911, the New York Academy of Sciences formally adopted the name. Morganite gained popularity in the early 20th century, especially in Art Deco jewelry, and was later discovered in Brazil, Afghanistan, and the United States (California and Maine). The largest known faceted morganite, the “Rose of Maine,” weighs over 600 carats and is displayed at the Harvard Museum of Natural History.4
Major sources of morganite include Madagascar, Brazil (Minas Gerais), Afghanistan, and Mozambique. The Minas Gerais region in Brazil has produced large, high-quality crystals, often associated with pegmatite deposits. In the United States, morganite has been found in the Pala District of California and in Oxford County, Maine. Mining is typically small-scale and artisanal, with crystals recovered from weathered pegmatite. The global supply is limited compared to other beryl varieties, and fine morganite is relatively rare. In 2017, a significant find in Afghanistan yielded gemmy pink crystals that entered the market, boosting availability.5
Morganite is sometimes confused with pink topaz or rose quartz, but its higher hardness and beryl composition distinguish it. A notable edge case is the “peach” morganite, which contains both manganese and iron, giving a warm orange tint. In the early 20th century, morganite was marketed as “rose beryl” before its official name. The largest rough morganite crystal ever found weighed over 10 kg and was discovered in Brazil in the 1980s. Morganite is also a birthstone for October in some modern listings, though it is not traditional. Synthetic morganite has been produced since the 1990s, but natural stones remain more valued. The gem is often treated with irradiation to produce a deeper pink, though this is less common than heat treatment.6
