A Moon landing is the arrival of a spacecraft on the surface of the Moon, most famously the 1969 Apollo 11 landing. Six crewed landings occurred between 1969 and 1972, while numerous robotic missions have landed, roved, or attempted controlled landings.
A Moon landing requires a spacecraft to descend through the Moon’s weak but irregular gravity field and make a controlled contact with its surface. The achievement depended on precise navigation, propulsion, communications, life support, and a launch vehicle capable of sending a crew beyond Earth orbit.1 The United States developed this capability through the Apollo program, preceded by the robotic Surveyor program, which tested soft-landing techniques and examined lunar soil.
The Soviet Luna program achieved the first controlled lunar landing, Luna 9, in 1966. Apollo 11 followed on 20 July 1969, fulfilling President John F. Kennedy’s goal of landing astronauts on the Moon and returning them safely to Earth before the end of the decade.2 A landing is distinct from a lunar flyby, orbit, impact, or brief contact by a hopping spacecraft.
Apollo 11 made the first crewed landing on 20 July 1969 in Mare Tranquillitatis, or the Sea of Tranquility.1 Commander Neil Armstrong and lunar-module pilot Buzz Aldrin descended in the lunar module Eagle, while command-module pilot Michael Collins remained in lunar orbit. Armstrong manually selected a landing site after seeing that the computer’s intended approach led toward a hazardous crater and boulder field.
Armstrong and Aldrin spent about 21 hours on the surface, deployed instruments, photographed the terrain, collected rocks and soil, and left a passive seismometer, laser-ranging reflector, and other equipment.3 The astronauts returned 21.5 kilograms of samples. Their landing demonstrated that humans could operate beyond Earth while producing scientific observations under severe limits of fuel, time, communications, and mobility.
Five later Apollo missions landed astronauts at increasingly varied sites, extending surface stays and scientific capability.4 Apollo 12 made a highly accurate landing near the Surveyor 3 probe; Apollo 14 explored the Fra Mauro region; Apollo 15 introduced the lunar roving vehicle and emphasized geology; Apollo 16 investigated the Descartes highlands; and Apollo 17, the final crewed landing, included geologist Harrison Schmitt and explored the Taurus–Littrow valley.
The missions returned 382 kilograms of lunar material, including basalts, breccias, soils, and the distinctive orange volcanic glass sampled by Apollo 17.5 Seismometers, heat-flow probes, magnetometers, and laser reflectors continued to provide data after the astronauts departed. Robotic landers later broadened access, including China’s Chang’e 4, the first mission to land on the Moon’s far side.
The most difficult part of many landings was not reaching lunar orbit but choosing and surviving a safe descent path. The Moon has no atmosphere to support parachutes, dust can obscure terrain and damage mechanisms, and sunlight creates sharp thermal contrasts; landing systems therefore rely on rocket thrust, radar or optical navigation, and carefully designed shock-absorbing structures.6
Apollo landing sites were selected partly for lighting, terrain, communications, and scientific value, rather than simply for proximity to visually dramatic features. The astronauts also left commemorative objects, engineering hardware, and experiments that now form a record of early space activity. Several robotic attempts have failed through navigation, propulsion, software, or communications problems, illustrating that a soft landing is a separate technical accomplishment from launch or lunar orbit. The Artemis program is intended to return astronauts to the lunar surface and develop longer-term operations, including work near the south pole.
