A mobile phone is a portable telephone that makes and receives calls over a radio link. It communicates with nearby base stations in a cellular network, allowing users to remain connected while moving between coverage areas. Modern devices may also provide messaging, internet access, cameras, navigation, and computing functions, but telephony over a wireless network remains the defining function.
A mobile phone converts speech into radio signals and exchanges them with a nearby base station. The base station connects the call to the public switched telephone network or to another mobile device, while a cellular network divides territory into overlapping cells so that frequencies can be reused. As a caller moves, network equipment performs a handover between cells without normally interrupting the conversation.1
Earlier mobile phones primarily handled voice, whereas smartphones combine cellular radios with operating systems, cameras, applications, and internet protocols. The underlying telephone function is still distinct from a cordless phone: a cordless handset usually depends on a private household base, while a mobile phone uses licensed or regulated wide-area radio services. Cellular standards specify how devices authenticate, register, exchange data, and manage mobility.2
Handheld cellular telephony emerged from earlier vehicle-mounted radiotelephone systems. Martin Cooper of Motorola made a widely recognized public handheld call in 1973, and commercial handheld service followed in the 1980s; early first-generation networks used analog voice and bulky, expensive equipment.1
Second-generation systems such as GSM introduced digital voice, improved capacity, and the Short Message Service, while later generations added packet data and higher speeds. Third-generation networks made mobile internet practical at broader scale; fourth-generation LTE moved many services toward all-IP networking. Fifth-generation systems extend capacity, latency, and device-management capabilities for phones and other connected equipment, with specifications maintained through the 3GPP partnership.23
A subscriber identity module, commonly called a SIM card, associates a subscription with a mobile device and stores credentials used for network authentication. Modern phones may use an embedded SIM, while the device itself has a separate hardware identity. Network operators use these identities, radio measurements, and subscriber records to route calls, manage roaming, and apply service policies.
Voice is only one service. Mobile phones support text messaging, multimedia messaging, packet data, Wi-Fi calling, location-based functions, and accessibility tools such as amplified audio or text communication. Emergency calls receive special regulatory treatment: in the United States, wireless providers must transmit 911 calls and available location information, although an unregistered device or weak signal may limit callback or location capabilities.4 International adoption has made mobile-cellular subscriptions a major measure of communications access, although subscriptions do not necessarily represent unique people.5
Mobile phones remain useful even when their most visible services are unavailable. A phone can often place an emergency call through a compatible network other than the subscriber’s normal carrier, but national rules, handset behavior, and coverage differ; emergency callers should not assume that location or a return call will work reliably.4
Radio-frequency exposure is another frequently misunderstood dimension. Phones transmit at power levels that vary with distance from a base station, network conditions, and the task being performed; public-health assessments distinguish exposure from the established hazards of ionizing radiation, and the World Health Organization continues to evaluate research on possible long-term effects. Less conspicuous differences also matter: a phone may support several regional frequency bands yet lack compatibility with every network, and older devices can lose service when operators retire legacy generations. Access likewise depends on affordability, electricity, coverage, language, disability support, and digital skills rather than on handset ownership alone.5
“Mobile phone” is used here in the general telephony sense and includes both feature phones and smartphones; smartphone computing functions are secondary to the defining radio-based telephone service.
