Mixing console

A mixing console (also called a mixing desk, mixer, or soundboard) is an electronic device for combining, routing, and processing multiple audio signals. It allows an engineer to adjust the level, tone, and spatial placement of each input, blend them into a coherent mix, and send the result to outputs such as loudspeakers, recording devices, or broadcast transmitters. Analog consoles process audio using continuous electrical signals, with each channel's circuitry dedicated to that input. They are prized for their tactile immediacy, simplicity, and the subtle coloration of their preamps and equalizers. Classic analog desks, such as the Neve 8078 or SSL 4000 series, are still used in many studios for their sonic character.

Digital consoles convert audio to digital data and process it with DSP chips, offering recall of settings, automation, and powerful routing. Mixing consoles are used in a wide range of settings. In live sound, they mix microphones and instruments for concerts, theaters, and houses of worship, often with extensive monitor mixing for performers. In recording studios, consoles route signals to multitrack recorders and provide monitoring and mixing for playback. Broadcast consoles are designed for radio and television, with features like fader starts, talkback, and redundancy.

Post-production facilities use consoles to mix dialogue, music, and sound effects for film and television, often with surround sound capabilities. Smaller mixers are used in podcasting, streaming, and home studios, while large-format digital consoles dominate major tours and broadcast trucks. The choice of console depends on the number of inputs, required features, and the operator's preference for analog or digital workflow.

Lesser-known aspects

Beyond the familiar channel strips, mixing consoles have many niche features and historical quirks. Some early consoles used vacuum tubes and had no EQ; equalization was added later as a separate outboard unit. The first transistor consoles appeared in the 1960s, and the first digitally controlled analog consoles emerged in the 1980s, such as the Neve 8100 series.

Some consoles include unique features like VCA (voltage-controlled amplifier) grouping, which allows faders to control multiple channels without affecting the audio path, and MIDI control for automation. The SSL 4000 series introduced 'Total Recall' in 1979, a system that stored knob positions as voltage values for later recall.
