Dhaka Metropolitan Police

The DMP was formally constituted in 1976, succeeding the earlier Dhaka Police District, to address the unique challenges of the rapidly growing capital. It is organized into several ranges and divisions, each headed by a Deputy Commissioner, and operates through a network of police stations (thanas) and specialized units such as the Detective Branch, Traffic Division, and Counter-Terrorism and Transnational Crime unit. The force is overseen by the Police Headquarters and the Ministry of Home Affairs, with the Commissioner holding the rank of Additional Inspector General.

Beyond routine patrol and crime investigation, the DMP manages traffic in one of the most congested cities in the world, operates emergency response through its 999 hotline, and deploys specialized units for riot control, VIP protection, and cybercrime. It also runs community policing initiatives and collaborates with international agencies on transnational crime. During major religious festivals and political rallies, the DMP coordinates large-scale security operations to prevent unrest and ensure public safety.¹

The DMP faces significant challenges, including overcrowding, traffic congestion, political polarization, and allegations of human rights abuses. In response, it has implemented reforms such as the introduction of body-worn cameras, community mediation programs, and a dedicated women's helpline. However, critics argue that politicization and corruption remain systemic issues. The force has also been involved in counter-terrorism operations, notably after the 2016 Holey Artisan Bakery attack, leading to increased surveillance and intelligence-sharing.²

One lesser-known fact is that the DMP operates a mounted police unit for crowd control in the old city, a rarity in South Asia. It also runs a marine police unit to patrol the Buriganga River, which is vital for riverine crime prevention. The DMP's Cyber Crime Investigation Division was among the first in the region to establish a digital forensics lab. Additionally, the force has a dedicated 'Tourist Police' unit to assist foreign visitors, and it participates in UN peacekeeping missions, with officers serving in conflict zones under the blue helmet.³
