Reproduction and development

Marsupials give birth to highly altricial young after a short gestation period, often lasting only 12–30 days depending on the species.1 The newborn, sometimes called a joey, is typically the size of a jellybean and must crawl from the birth canal to the teat, where it latches on for weeks or months. In most species, the teats are sheltered within a permanent pouch, but some marsupials, like the short-tailed opossum, lack a true pouch and the young are simply attached to the teats exposed on the abdomen. The prolonged lactation allows for a complex milk composition that changes as the young develops, providing tailored nutrition.

Evolution and diversity

Marsupials are an ancient lineage that diverged from placental mammals during the Jurassic period, around 160 million years ago.2 They once inhabited all continents, but today they are restricted to the Americas (about 100 species) and Australasia (about 200 species), with the highest diversity in Australia and New Guinea.1 The order Diprotodontia includes kangaroos, koalas, and wombats, while Didelphimorphia includes the opossums of the Americas. Fossil evidence shows that marsupials evolved a wide range of body forms, including saber-toothed predators like Thylacosmilus and giant herbivores like Diprotodon.3

Ecology and behavior

Marsupials occupy a vast array of ecological niches, from arboreal gliders to burrowing insectivores and large grazing herbivores.1 Many species are nocturnal, using keen senses of smell and hearing to locate food, while others, like the numbat, are diurnal and feed on termites.4 The thylacine, or Tasmanian tiger, was the largest carnivorous marsupial of modern times, but it was driven to extinction in the 20th century due to hunting and habitat loss.5 Marsupials have evolved remarkable adaptations, such as the ability of some kangaroos to enter embryonic diapause, delaying the development of a new embryo until the previous joey has left the pouch.

Lesser-known aspects

Beyond the familiar kangaroo and koala, marsupials include many obscure and surprising forms. The monito del monte, a small arboreal marsupial of South America, is more closely related to Australian marsupials than to other American species, reflecting a complex biogeographic history.6 The yapok, or water opossum, is the only aquatic marsupial, with webbed feet and a waterproof pouch for swimming.
