The Mars Exploration Rover (MER) mission was a NASA robotic spaceflight mission that landed two rovers, Spirit and Opportunity, on Mars in January 2004. Designed to last 90 sols (Martian days), both rovers vastly exceeded their planned lifetimes, with Opportunity operating for nearly 15 years. The mission's primary goal was to search for evidence of past water activity on Mars, and it made numerous discoveries that reshaped understanding of the planet's geological and climatic history.
The Mars Exploration Rover mission was developed by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) to conduct detailed geological studies of the Martian surface. Each rover carried a suite of instruments, including panoramic cameras (Pancam), a microscopic imager, and spectrometers to analyze rocks and soils. The primary scientific objective was to characterize a diverse set of rocks and soils that may hold clues to past water activity, and to determine whether the landing sites were ever habitable.
The rovers were launched on Delta II rockets from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in 2003. Spirit landed in Gusev Crater on January 4, 2004, and Opportunity landed on the opposite side of the planet in Meridiani Planum on January 25, 2004. The landing sites were selected from orbital imagery as promising locations where water might have once flowed or pooled.
Opportunity's most significant discovery was the identification of hematite, a mineral that often forms in the presence of water, in the Meridiani Planum region. The rover also found sulfate-rich rocks and sedimentary structures, such as cross-bedding, that provided strong evidence of ancient shallow lakes or seas. Spirit, meanwhile, discovered evidence of past hydrothermal activity in the Columbia Hills, including silica-rich deposits that could have formed in hot springs or fumaroles.
Both rovers also contributed to understanding Martian atmospheric processes, including dust devils and wind erosion. Opportunity's long traverse across the Meridiani plains allowed scientists to map a vast expanse of the planet's surface, revealing a complex history of water and environmental change. The mission's success paved the way for later rovers, such as Curiosity and Perseverance, and demonstrated the value of long-duration surface exploration.
The rovers were engineered to survive harsh Martian conditions, including extreme temperature variations and dust storms. They were powered by solar panels, which gradually became covered with dust, reducing power output. However, periodic cleaning events, such as dust devils, helped remove dust and extend the rovers' lifetimes. The mission team also had to manage the rovers' limited memory and communication windows, often planning commands in advance and executing them autonomously.
Spirit's mission ended in 2010 after becoming stuck in soft sand, and its last communication was on March 22, 2010. Opportunity continued until June 2018, when a planet-wide dust storm blocked sunlight from reaching its solar panels, causing it to lose power. NASA declared the mission complete in February 2019. The engineering lessons learned from MER informed the design of subsequent rovers, including improved wheel designs and more robust power systems.
One lesser-known aspect is that the rovers were named by a 9-year-old girl, Sofi Collis, who won a NASA essay contest. Her winning entry, titled 'The Possibilities,' inspired the names Spirit and Opportunity. Another obscure fact is that the rovers carried a small piece of aluminum from the World Trade Center, which was attached to the cable cutter on each rover as a tribute to the victims of 9/11.
Additionally, the rovers' software was updated during the mission to improve autonomous navigation, allowing them to traverse longer distances without human intervention. The mission also pioneered the use of 'targeted' science campaigns, where the rovers would perform multiple observations at a single location before moving on. The data collected by MER continues to be analyzed, and some findings have been re-interpreted in light of newer discoveries, such as the presence of organic molecules on Mars.
The Mars Exploration Rover mission is considered one of NASA's most successful planetary exploration endeavors, with its discoveries continuing to influence Mars science.
