Marissa Paternoster

Marissa Paternoster emerged from New Brunswick, New Jersey’s independent music community and co-founded Screaming Females with bassist King Mike and drummer Jarrett Dougherty in 2005. The trio developed a tightly interlocked sound rooted in punk, garage rock, and power-pop, while Paternoster supplied both the lead vocals and the central guitar voice. The band’s early recordings and relentless touring established it within the American DIY circuit before broader critical attention followed.¹

Paternoster’s dual role gave Screaming Females an unusually concentrated musical identity: the guitar often functions as a second vocal line, shifting from compact riffs to expansive, noisy solos without losing the songs’ hooks. Her performances also challenged the expectation that women in guitar bands should occupy primarily front-person or rhythm-player roles.²

Paternoster is recognized for a forceful vocal delivery and technically ambitious guitar playing. Her singing can move from a raspy bark to a clear, ringing register, while her solos draw on blues-rock phrasing, punk economy, and unusually fluid melodic runs. Critics frequently treated that combination as central to Screaming Females’ appeal rather than as a novelty attached to a female-fronted band.

The band’s albums, including Power Move, Castle Talk, Ugly, Rose Mountain, and All at Once, trace a progression from concise DIY punk toward larger, more dynamically varied arrangements. Paternoster’s guitar work became especially prominent in the group’s live reputation, where extended improvisation could expand songs beyond their studio structures.³

Visual art is an important parallel to Paternoster’s music. She has created distinctive illustrations and artwork associated with Screaming Females and other independent music projects, extending the band’s identity beyond its recordings and performances. Her drawings are commonly characterized by expressive line work, surreal or grotesque imagery, and a handmade quality consistent with the group’s DIY practice.⁴

Paternoster has also appeared outside the band in collaborative and guest contexts, including work connected with other musicians in the independent-rock scene. These activities reveal a broader role as a creator whose practice crosses performance, composition, recording, and image-making. Her career illustrates how musicians in DIY networks often operate simultaneously as performers, designers, promoters, and community participants.

Screaming Females’ importance was not based on chart scale but on the reach of its touring network and the influence of its self-directed working methods. The band played small venues, released music through independent labels, and built a reputation through sustained contact with local scenes rather than conventional pop promotion. That context helps explain why Paternoster became a model for technically ambitious, self-managed guitar performance.⁵

In January 2023, Screaming Females announced that the band would end after its scheduled final shows, bringing an eighteen-year collaboration to a close.⁶ The announcement placed Paternoster’s work in a retrospective light: her legacy rests not only on recorded songs, but also on the example of a small, durable band sustaining an uncompromising artistic identity across nearly two decades.
