Formation and early career

Mai Tai was formed in 1984 in the Netherlands by producer and songwriter Eric van Tijn and Jochem Fluitsma, who later became known as the production duo Fluitsma & van Tijn. The group originally consisted of three vocalists: Carolien van der Berg, Mandy Versteeg, and Jetty Weels. Their name was inspired by the tropical cocktail, reflecting the group's upbeat, summery sound.

The trio's debut single, "Keep Your Body Warm," was released in 1984 and achieved moderate success in the Dutch charts. However, it was their second single, "History," released in 1985, that became their breakthrough hit, reaching number 5 in the Netherlands and charting in several other European countries.

International success

Following the success of "History," Mai Tai released "Female Intuition" in 1985, which became their biggest hit, reaching number 2 in the Netherlands and number 8 in Belgium. The song also charted in Germany, France, and the United Kingdom, where it peaked at number 42 on the UK Singles Chart.

Their debut album, Mai Tai, was released in 1985 and included both hits. The album sold well in Europe and was later released in the United States by Polydor Records, though it did not achieve significant chart success there. The group's music was characterized by polished production, catchy melodies, and the vocal harmonies of the three singers.

Later years and disbandment

After the release of their second album, Cool Is the Rule (1986), Mai Tai's popularity began to decline. The album produced the single "Turn Your Love Around," which had moderate success in the Netherlands but failed to replicate the chart performance of their earlier hits.

In 1987, the group released the single "Heartbreak" and an album titled Mai Tai (also known as Dance in the Light), but by 1988 the group disbanded. The members pursued solo careers or left the music industry. Carolien van der Berg later became a vocal coach, while Mandy Versteeg and Jetty Weels moved into other fields.

Legacy and influence

Mai Tai is remembered as one of the notable Dutch pop acts of the 1980s, contributing to the era's dance-pop sound. Their music has been included in various compilation albums and has been sampled or covered by other artists. For example, the song "History" was covered by the German band Bad Boys Blue in 1991.

The group's success also helped establish the production duo Fluitsma & van Tijn, who went on to produce hits for other Dutch artists such as Linda, Roos & Jessica and Total Touch. Mai Tai's music continues to be played on retro radio stations and in clubs that feature 1980s music.

Lesser-known aspects

Despite their mainstream success, several lesser-known facts about Mai Tai exist. The group's original lineup included a fourth member, but she left before the release of their first single. The name "Mai Tai" was chosen because the cocktail was a favorite of the producers, and it was also a nod to the group's fun, tropical image.

Mai Tai's music was particularly popular in Japan, where they released exclusive remixes and performed at the 1986 Tokyo Music Festival. Additionally, the group's single "Female Intuition" was featured in the 1986 film Playing for Keeps, starring Daniel Jordano and Marlon Brando's son, Christian Brando.
