Hospitality & Gaming
MGM Resorts International is a global hospitality and entertainment company headquartered in Las Vegas, Nevada, operating some of the world's most iconic casino resorts, including the Bellagio, MGM Grand, and The Mirage. It is one of the largest gaming companies in the world by revenue, with properties across the United States and Asia, and a significant presence in sports betting and online gaming through its BetMGM brand.
MGM Resorts International traces its roots to the 1986 acquisition of the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas by Kirk Kerkorian, who had earlier built the original MGM Grand in 1973. The company was incorporated as MGM Grand Inc. in 1999 and renamed MGM Mirage in 2000 after merging with Mirage Resorts, adding properties such as the Bellagio and Treasure Island. In 2010, the company adopted its current name, MGM Resorts International, reflecting its global ambitions.1 A pivotal moment came in 2000 when it acquired Mirage Resorts, and later in 2005 with the purchase of Mandalay Resort Group, which brought the Luxor, Excalibur, and Mandalay Bay into its portfolio.2
The company's flagship Las Vegas Strip properties include the MGM Grand, one of the largest hotels in the world with over 6,800 rooms, and the Bellagio, renowned for its fountains and fine art collection. Beyond Las Vegas, MGM operates regional casinos in states such as Mississippi, Michigan, and Maryland, and has a significant international presence through MGM China Holdings, which operates two resorts in Macau: MGM Macau and MGM Cotai. In 2023, MGM opened the first casino resort in Japan, MGM Osaka, a joint venture with Orix Corporation, marking its entry into the Japanese market. The company also sold the operations of The Mirage to Hard Rock International in 2022, while retaining ownership of the land, a rare structure in the industry.3
MGM Resorts has aggressively expanded into online gaming and sports betting through BetMGM, a joint venture with Entain, launched in 2018. BetMGM operates mobile sports betting in more than 20 states and online casino in several, making it a top-three operator in the U.S. market.4 The company has also partnered with major sports leagues, including the NBA and MLB, to integrate betting data and marketing, and in 2021 became the first casino operator to offer live betting at a professional sports venue through its partnership with the Vegas Golden Knights at T-Mobile Arena.5 In 2023, BetMGM launched in the United Kingdom, its first international market, signaling further global ambitions.6
MGM Resorts has a history of architectural and technological innovation: the MGM Grand was the first hotel to use a fully automated check-in kiosk in 1995, and the Bellagio's conservatory is redesigned five times a year by a team of horticulturists. The company also operates the MGM Resorts Foundation, which has donated over $100 million to local nonprofits since 2002. A lesser-known fact is that MGM owns a 50% stake in the CityCenter development, which includes the Aria and Vdara, a project that nearly bankrupted the company during the 2008 financial crisis. Additionally, MGM was the first casino company to be included in the S&P 500, in 2005, and has been a leader in sustainability, with its Las Vegas properties powered by 100% renewable energy since 2020.
MGM Resorts International is a publicly traded company listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol MGM.
