The Lunar Module (LM) was the first spacecraft designed solely for operation in the vacuum of space, serving as the landing vehicle for NASA's Apollo program. It ferried two astronauts from lunar orbit to the Moon's surface and back, enabling the only crewed landings on another world. Built by Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation, the LM was a two-stage, lightweight craft that weighed about 15,000 kg fully fueled but could not re-enter Earth's atmosphere.
The Lunar Module was conceived as a separate vehicle to land on the Moon, a radical departure from earlier single-ship concepts. NASA chose a lunar-orbit rendezvous mission profile, which required a dedicated lander. Grumman, with no prior spacecraft experience, won the contract in 1962, and the design evolved under the leadership of engineers like Thomas J. Kelly. The LM consisted of a descent stage with a throttleable rocket engine and landing gear, and an ascent stage with a small crew cabin and engine for liftoff. To save weight, the spacecraft had no heat shield, no seats, and minimal life support, relying on the Apollo Command Module for Earth return.
Ten crewed LMs flew during the Apollo program. The first crewed mission, Apollo 9, tested the LM in Earth orbit in 1969. Apollo 10 performed a dress rehearsal in lunar orbit, descending to 14 km of the surface. The first landing was Apollo 11, when Eagle touched down on July 20, 1969, with Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin aboard. A total of six LMs landed successfully, with Apollo 15, 16, and 17 each spending three days on the surface. The final LM to fly was on Apollo 17 in 1972. One LM, on Apollo 13, served as a lifeboat after an oxygen tank explosion disabled the Command Module.
The LM's descent engine was significant as the first throttleable rocket engine in crewed spaceflight, with a capability to vary thrust from 10% to 60% of maximum, allowing pilots to perform a precise landing. The ascent engine was hypergolic, using a fixed-thrust heptyl/Aerozine 50 and nitrogen tetroxide propellant, which was critical for reliable ignition in the vacuum of space. The LM's computer, the Apollo Guidance Computer, had a 2K-word memory and a 36K-word disk, but its software was expertly crafted to handle the complex lunar descent. The spacecraft also featured a unique landing radar system that emitted four beams to measure altitude and velocity.
Many fascinating details of the LM are not widely known. For example, the LM had a mass of only about 4,700 kg when empty, and its exterior was covered in a variety of materials, including a thin Mylar insulation that was fragile and often torn during handling. The astronauts had no seats but used a harness or a constant-wear spacesuit. The LM's windows were not round but triangular, designed to optimize visibility and weight. The spacecraft also incorporated a 'spider' nickname for the Apollo 9 LM. A lesser-known figure is Granville Packard, a Grumman engineer who devised the lightweight 'Eagle' landing gear. Additionally, the LM's descent stage was left on the Moon, and its ascent stage was deliberately crashed into the surface after jettisoning, to provide seismic data.
