Liu Ye (born 23 March 1978) is a Chinese actor known for his versatility across independent and mainstream cinema. He gained international recognition for his roles in Lan Yu (2001) and Curse of the Golden Flower (2006), and later appeared in Hollywood productions such as Space Cowboys (2000) and The Great Wall (2016).
Liu Ye was born in Donghu District, Nanchang, Jiangxi Province, to a family with no show-business background. He studied at the Central Academy of Drama in Beijing, graduating in 2000 with a degree in acting. During his studies, he appeared in stage productions, honing a craft that would later earn him critical acclaim for his emotional range.
Liu's film debut came in 2000 with Space Cowboys, a minor role in a Hollywood production. His breakthrough was Lan Yu (2001), a gay romance set in Beijing, for which he won the Best Actor award at the 2001 Golden Horse Awards. He then starred in Zhang Yimou's Curse of the Golden Flower (2006), a period drama that brought him to global attention. In 2016, he appeared in The Great Wall, a Chinese-American monster film, and later took on the role of a detective in the crime thriller Blind Detective (2013).
Beyond cinema, Liu has acted in Chinese television series, including the historical drama The Advisors Alliance (2017), where he portrayed the strategist Sima Yi. He has also returned to the stage, performing in plays such as Thunderstorm by Cao Yu, demonstrating his commitment to classical Chinese drama. His stage work is less known internationally but highly regarded in China.
Liu Ye is also a trained dancer, having studied ballet in his youth, which influenced his physicality in action roles. He is married to actress Anny Yi, and they have two children. In 2004, he was named one of the 'Top 10 Most Promising Actors' by the Chinese Film Performance Society. He has also voiced characters in Chinese-language dubs of animated films, including Kung Fu Panda 3 (2016).
