Lila Downs

Lila Downs was born in 1968 in Tlaxiaco, Oaxaca, to a Mixtec mother and a Scottish-American father. Her multicultural upbringing exposed her to both indigenous traditions and American folk music, shaping her unique artistic identity. She studied voice and anthropology in the United States, which deepened her understanding of cultural expression. Downs began performing in local venues, blending traditional Mexican songs with contemporary styles, and her debut album Ofrenda (1994) reflected this fusion. Her early work established her as a voice for marginalized communities, often addressing social justice themes.

Downs gained international recognition with albums like La Sandunga (1999) and Una Sangre (2004), which showcased her ability to reinterpret traditional music. Her 2008 album Shake Away won a Latin Grammy for Best Folk Album, and she later won a Grammy for Pecados y Milagros (2011). She has performed at major venues worldwide, including the Hollywood Bowl and the Montreux Jazz Festival. Her collaborations with artists like Caetano Veloso and Mercedes Sosa have expanded her reach. Downs has also acted in films, including Frida (2002), where she contributed to the soundtrack.

Beyond music, Downs is a dedicated activist for indigenous rights and language preservation. She sings in Mixtec and Zapotec, bringing these languages to global audiences and raising awareness about their fragility. Her album Balón y Canción (2015) addressed migration and border issues, reflecting her commitment to social commentary. Downs has worked with UNESCO on cultural heritage projects and has spoken at forums on indigenous women's rights. Her efforts have made her a cultural bridge between Mexico and the United States, challenging stereotypes and celebrating diversity.

Downs is also a trained anthropologist, having studied at the University of Minnesota, which informs her research-driven approach to music. She has recorded a song in the Mixtec language for NASA's Golden Record project, symbolizing Earth's cultural diversity. Her lesser-known album La Cantina (2006) is a tribute to Mexican cantina music, featuring duets with artists like Iggy Pop. Downs has also composed music for theater and documentary films, including La misma luna (2007). She is known for her elaborate stage costumes, often designed by indigenous artisans, blending fashion with cultural storytelling.
