Lesser Sunda Islands

The Lesser Sunda Islands are an archipelago in southeastern Indonesia and East Timor, extending eastward from Bali through Lombok, Sumbawa, Flores, Sumba, the Alor and Solor groups, and Timor. The islands combine active volcanoes, dry seasonal landscapes, coral seas, and cultures shaped by Austronesian, Asian, and European connections.

Geography and geology

The Lesser Sunda Islands form a curving island chain between the Bali Sea, the Flores Sea, the Savu Sea, and the Indian Ocean.1 Bali and Lombok lie at the western entrance, followed by Sumbawa, Flores, Sumba, and Timor; smaller members include Alor, Rote, Savu, and the Solor islands. Politically, most of the archipelago belongs to Indonesia, while the eastern part of Timor is the independent state of Timor-Leste. The term is geographic rather than a single administrative unit.

Most of the islands sit along the Sunda volcanic arc, where the Australian Plate descends beneath the Eurasian Plate. Volcanoes, earthquakes, uplifted coral terraces, and deep offshore trenches are consequently prominent features.2 Bali and Lombok are relatively humid in parts, but Sumba, Timor, and the northern coastal zones of several islands have pronounced dry seasons created by monsoonal winds and rain-shadow effects.

Ecology and biogeography

The islands are a major transition zone between Asian and Australasian wildlife. The Wallace Line, traditionally drawn between Bali and Lombok, marks a sharp faunal break, while the broader region known as Wallacea contains species assembled from both continental realms and many local endemics.1 Sea channels that remained deep during past ice ages prevented some animals from moving between islands, helping produce unusually localized distributions.

Habitats range from montane forest and savanna to mangroves, seagrass beds, and coral reefs. Komodo National Park, between Sumbawa and Flores, protects islands and surrounding marine waters and is recognized for exceptional terrestrial and marine biodiversity.3 Its best-known animal, the Komodo dragon, is restricted to a small number of Indonesian islands and is classified as Endangered on the IUCN Red List. Reef degradation, invasive species, fire, and freshwater scarcity complicate conservation.

People, history, and livelihoods

Human societies in the Lesser Sunda Islands are culturally diverse, with Austronesian languages and customs interwoven with older local traditions. Balinese Hinduism has shaped Bali's temples, ceremonies, irrigation institutions, and arts, while Islam predominates across much of the Indonesian chain; Christianity is especially influential in parts of Flores and Timor. Timor-Leste has its own national political history and is linguistically and religiously diverse.

Island economies have long combined farming, livestock raising, fishing, inter-island trade, and forest products. Rice cultivation is important in wetter districts, whereas dry islands depend more heavily on maize, cassava, sorghum, cattle, and seasonal water sources. Bali became a major international tourism destination, while Lombok, Komodo, Flores, and Sumba have developed tourism around beaches, diving, landscapes, and cultural heritage. Bali's Subak irrigation system, a cooperative water-management institution associated with Hindu religious practice, is inscribed as a UNESCO cultural landscape.4

Lesser-known aspects

The archipelago's dry eastern character can be as significant as its volcanoes. Sumba and Timor contain extensive seasonal grasslands and savannas, and some islands experience severe water shortages despite being surrounded by ocean. This contrast helps explain why agriculture, settlement, and political power have historically concentrated in particular valleys and uplands rather than along every coast.

Mount Tambora on Sumbawa erupted catastrophically in April 1815; the eruption is listed by the Smithsonian Global Volcanism Program among the most significant explosive eruptions of the historical period.2 It reshaped the volcano and affected climate far beyond Indonesia. Other less familiar features include the raised coral landscapes of Timor, the narrow channels separating the islands, and the importance of the Savu Sea as a regional migration and fishing zone. The chain is therefore not a uniform island group but a mosaic of geological, climatic, and cultural settings.
