Larry Page is an American computer scientist and entrepreneur who co-founded Google with Sergey Brin and later served as chief executive of Google and Alphabet. His work helped turn web search from an academic research problem into a global internet service, while his later interests extended to artificial intelligence, autonomous vehicles, aviation, and other frontier technologies.1
Larry Page was shaped by a family deeply involved in computing and artificial intelligence. He was born on March 26, 1973, in East Lansing, Michigan, to computer-science professor Carl Victor Page and Gloria Page, who taught computer programming.1 His childhood exposure to computers helped lead him toward engineering, although his later interests also included transportation and invention.
Page studied computer engineering at the University of Michigan, where he earned a bachelor’s degree and worked on projects including a solar-powered car and an inkjet printer built from inexpensive components.2 He entered Stanford University for graduate study in computer science in 1995. There he met Sergey Brin, who was assigned to help show him around the campus; the two soon became research collaborators. Page’s doctoral work focused on the structure of the World Wide Web and on methods for organizing its rapidly expanding information.
Page and Brin founded Google around a link-analysis method that ranked web pages partly by examining the links pointing to them. Their research prototype, initially called BackRub, treated links as signals of authority and drew an analogy to academic citations. The approach was more useful than many existing search methods because it considered the relationships among pages rather than relying only on the words appearing on a page.
Google was incorporated in 1998, after the founders had tested the service from Stanford and moved operations into a rented garage in Menlo Park, California.1 Page served as Google’s first chief executive, then became president of products when Eric Schmidt joined as chief executive in 2001. The company expanded from search into advertising, email, maps, video, mobile software, and cloud computing. Its advertising model, particularly keyword-based search advertising, supplied the financial base for distributing these services at worldwide scale.
Page returned as Google chief executive in April 2011, succeeding Schmidt, and used the role to simplify management and emphasize major product areas. During this period Google acquired Motorola Mobility, expanded Android, invested in artificial intelligence, and developed experimental projects through Google X, including self-driving-car research and high-altitude connectivity concepts.3
In 2015, Google became a subsidiary of a new parent company, Alphabet Inc., with Page as chief executive and Brin as president. The restructuring separated the core Google business from projects such as life sciences and other longer-term ventures, giving their leaders greater operational independence. Page stepped down as Alphabet’s chief executive in December 2019, when Sundar Pichai became chief executive of both Google and Alphabet. Page and Brin remained Alphabet directors, while Pichai assumed day-to-day executive leadership.
Page’s interests have consistently extended beyond conventional web companies. At the University of Michigan he helped build a solar-powered vehicle, and at Google he encouraged projects aimed at problems whose technical and commercial paths were uncertain. Those efforts included early work that became Waymo, Alphabet’s autonomous-driving company, and investments associated with flying-car and electric-aircraft concepts.3
His management philosophy also reflected a preference for ambitious technical bets and relatively small, empowered teams. The Alphabet structure formalized that preference by placing several non-search initiatives in separate businesses, although the arrangement did not make every project successful. Page has generally maintained a low public profile compared with many technology executives. His influence is therefore more visible in Google’s organizational design, research priorities, and founding assumptions about automated information retrieval than in frequent public appearances.
Page helped establish the modern search-engine industry by combining academic ideas about network structure with a practical interface and a scalable advertising business. Google’s PageRank system was not the only reason for the company’s success, but it gave the early service a distinctive advantage in locating relevant pages amid the web’s rapid growth.
His broader legacy includes the normalization of internet services that index, rank, and personalize immense collections of information. It also includes a model of technology companies using profitable core products to finance speculative research in artificial intelligence, robotics, transportation, and life sciences. Critics have raised concerns about Google’s market power, data collection, and the social consequences of ranking information; these issues concern the institution Page co-founded as much as his own executive decisions.
