The Lamborghini Miura was a mid-engined sports car produced by Lamborghini from 1966 to 1973. Its transverse V12 layout, Bertone styling, and unusually compact proportions helped establish the modern high-performance supercar template.1
The Miura began as an engineering experiment before becoming Lamborghini’s defining road car. Chassis engineers Gian Paolo Dallara, Paolo Stanzani, and test driver Bob Wallace developed a compact platform with the engine mounted transversely behind the cockpit, drawing on ideas associated with racing-car packaging.1 Ferruccio Lamborghini initially regarded the project cautiously, but its technical promise led to a production model.
The car’s body was styled by Marcello Gandini at Bertone and publicly presented at the 1966 Geneva Motor Show. Its low nose, flying-buttress roof pillars, and headlamps surrounded by distinctive black eyelashes gave the Miura a visual identity unlike Lamborghini’s earlier front-engined grand tourers. The layout also concentrated mass near the center of the car, a major change from conventional high-performance road-car practice.
The Miura evolved through three principal production versions: the P400, the P400S, and the P400SV. The original P400 used a 3.9-liter, four-cam V12 producing roughly 350 horsepower; the S version introduced detail improvements and greater power, while the SV revised suspension, tires, bodywork, and lubrication arrangements.1
The P400SV is generally regarded as the most mature road-going version. It gained wider rear bodywork, larger rear tires, revised rear suspension geometry, and separate engine and gearbox lubrication on many examples. A small number of cars received optional factory air conditioning or a limited-slip differential. Performance figures varied with testing conditions, but the Miura was capable of approximately 280 km/h in its most powerful form, placing it among the fastest production cars of its era.2
The Miura changed the public meaning of Lamborghini by making an exotic mid-engined layout the center of a road-car design rather than a racing-derived curiosity. Its architecture influenced later flagship cars from Lamborghini and competing manufacturers, while its dramatic appearance made it a prominent symbol of 1960s automotive culture.3
Production remained limited: commonly cited totals are about 764 cars across the P400, P400S, and P400SV series.1 The Miura was not an uncomplicated machine; early cars demanded careful setup, and the transverse engine, cramped service access, and high thermal load could challenge owners and technicians. Nevertheless, its combination of speed, sound, and styling gave Lamborghini a lasting position in the luxury-performance market. The model’s successor in this role was the Countach, introduced in the 1970s with an even more radical angular design.
The Miura’s most unusual production feature was not simply its mid-engine position but the transverse orientation of its V12, which helped keep the wheelbase short. The engine and gearbox were initially housed in a closely integrated assembly, reflecting the need to fit a large twelve-cylinder engine into a compact two-seat body.1
Several specialized derivatives broadened the model’s story. The Miura Roadster was a one-off open car displayed at the 1968 Brussels Motor Show and later modified for other purposes; it should not be confused with a regular production convertible. The P400 Jota was a highly modified development car built around Bob Wallace’s testing work, with lightweight construction, altered aerodynamics, and competition-oriented mechanical changes. It was not a normal factory production version, although later customers commissioned replicas or “SVJ”-style conversions, making Miura classifications especially dependent on provenance.
