Kukri Hills

The Kukri Hills are a rugged mountain range in the Transantarctic Mountains of Antarctica, extending about 40 kilometers (25 miles) between the Ferrar Glacier and Taylor Glacier in Victoria Land. Named by the British Antarctic Expedition (1910–1913) for the curved shape of their ridges, which resemble the traditional Nepalese kukri knife, the hills are a key site for studying the region's glacial history and geology.

Geography and glaciology

The Kukri Hills form a prominent barrier between two major outlet glaciers of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet. Their northern flank descends steeply to the Ferrar Glacier, while the southern slopes meet the Taylor Glacier, which flows through the Taylor Valley—one of the McMurdo Dry Valleys. The range is composed primarily of granite and gneiss of the Ross Orogeny, with Beacon Supergroup sedimentary rocks capping some summits.1

The glaciers on either side have carved deep valleys and left distinctive moraines, providing evidence of past ice thickness and flow directions. The Taylor Glacier is notable for its Blood Falls, an iron-rich brine discharge that stains the ice red, located near the western end of the hills.

Discovery and naming

The hills were first mapped by the British Antarctic Expedition (1910–1913), led by Robert Falcon Scott. The expedition's geologist, Thomas Griffith Taylor, explored the region and gave many features their names. The name "Kukri Hills" was suggested by Taylor because the sawtooth profile of the ridges reminded him of the curved Nepalese knife.2

Later expeditions, including the United States Antarctic Program and the New Zealand Antarctic Research Programme, conducted detailed surveys and geological studies. The area remains a focus for research on Antarctic ice sheet dynamics and paleoclimate.3

Geological significance

The Kukri Hills expose a rare cross-section of the Transantarctic Mountains, including the Kukri Erosion Surface, a major unconformity separating the crystalline basement from the overlying Beacon Supergroup. This surface records a period of uplift and erosion during the Paleozoic.4

The hills also contain dolerite sills of the Ferrar Large Igneous Province, which intruded during the breakup of Gondwana in the Jurassic. These sills form prominent cliffs and are important for understanding the thermal history of the region.5

Lesser-known aspects

Despite their remote location, the Kukri Hills are a site of active scientific interest. In 2014, researchers discovered a subglacial lake beneath the Taylor Glacier near the hills, which may harbor microbial life adapted to extreme conditions.

The hills are also a popular route for field camps supporting research in the Dry Valleys. The Canada Glacier, a small alpine glacier on the southern flank, is one of the few in the region that has been studied for its mass balance over multiple decades.6

In addition, the name "Kukri" is sometimes confused with the Kukri snake (a genus of Asian snakes), but the hills are named solely for the knife shape.
