A killer application (often shortened to killer app) is a software application or technology that is so compelling or useful that it drives sales of the platform or hardware on which it runs. The term became prominent in the 1980s and 1990s as personal computers and digital devices proliferated. Classic examples include the VisiCalc spreadsheet for the Apple II, the Netscape web browser for the early Internet, and the Nintendo 64's Super Mario 64 for 3D gaming. Killer apps often create new markets or transform existing ones, and they are frequently cited as key factors in the success of platforms such as the IBM PC, the World Wide Web, and smartphones.
A killer application is typically defined as a program that is so essential that users will purchase the underlying hardware or operating system solely to run it.
