Jungle (Professor Green song)

“Jungle” was released on 8 March 2010 as the lead single from Professor Green’s debut album Alive Till I’m Dead. The song was written by Professor Green (Stephen Manderson) and Maverick Sabre, with production by The Rural. It was the first taste of the album, which followed his 2009 mixtape The Green EP and his victory in a 2008 Jump Off rap battle.

The track’s lyrics reflect on the challenges of growing up in Hackney, East London, touching on themes of poverty, violence, and resilience. The chorus, sung by Maverick Sabre, contrasts the gritty verses with a melodic, soulful hook. The single’s release was supported by a music video directed by Ben Newman, which depicted the urban environment that inspired the song.

“Jungle” entered the UK Singles Chart at number 31, becoming Professor Green’s first top-40 hit. It also charted in Scotland, peaking at number 40. The song received positive reviews from music critics, who praised its honest storytelling and the blend of grime and hip-hop influences.

The track was later included on the album Alive Till I’m Dead, which itself reached number 2 on the UK Albums Chart. “Jungle” helped establish Professor Green as a prominent voice in British hip-hop, leading to subsequent hits like “I Need You Tonight” and “Read All About It”.

The music video for “Jungle” was filmed in Hackney and features Professor Green walking through the streets, interspersed with shots of local residents and scenes of urban life. The video was praised for its authentic portrayal of the area and its residents.

Professor Green performed “Jungle” at various festivals and television shows, including a notable performance on Later… with Jools Holland in 2010. The song also became a staple of his live set, often performed with Maverick Sabre joining him on stage.

“Jungle” was originally recorded with a different chorus, but the version with Maverick Sabre was chosen after the two met through a mutual friend. The song’s title is a metaphor for the urban environment, but it also references the “concrete jungle” concept popularized by the 1972 film Super Fly.

The B-side of the single included a remix by UK producer Jakwob, which added electronic elements to the track. The song was also used in the soundtrack of the 2011 film Anuvahood, which starred Adam Deacon. Despite its moderate chart position, “Jungle” remains a fan favourite and is often cited as one of Professor Green’s most personal tracks.
