Joey Santiago

Joey Santiago was born on June 10, 1965, in Manila, Philippines, and emigrated to the United States with his family as a child, settling in Massachusetts. He met Charles Thompson (later known as Black Francis) while both were students at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. In 1986, the two formed Pixies, with Santiago adopting the stage name 'Santiago' as his surname. Santiago's guitar style, heavily influenced by surf rock and bands like the Ventures, became a cornerstone of the band's sound. His use of dissonant, angular riffs and feedback-laden solos was a key element in the band's early recordings, including the 1988 album Surfer Rosa.

Santiago's playing is characterized by its melodic yet abrasive quality, often employing unusual scales and a minimalist approach that left space for the rhythm section. He cited guitarists such as Jimi Hendrix, Wes Montgomery, and Chet Atkins as influences, but his most distinctive touch came from his use of a Fender Telecaster and a Boss distortion pedal. His contributions were crucial to the Pixies' dynamic loud-quiet-loud structure, which later inspired bands like Nirvana and Radiohead. Santiago also experimented with slide guitar and alternate tunings, adding a textural depth that set the band apart from contemporaries.

After the Pixies disbanded in 1993, Santiago pursued various projects, including forming the band The Martinis with his wife Linda Mallari. He also worked as a session musician and producer, contributing to albums by artists such as Frank Black and the Catholics. In 2004, the Pixies reunited, and Santiago has since toured and recorded with the band, including the 2014 album Indie Cindy and the 2016 EP Head Carrier. He has also composed music for film and television, showcasing his versatility beyond rock.

Beyond his guitar work, Santiago is known for his quirky sense of humor and his habit of wearing a mask during live performances in the early days. He also contributed backing vocals and occasional songwriting, though he rarely took the lead. Santiago has cited the band's song 'Vamos' as a showcase of his improvisational skills, and he has expressed admiration for the experimental side of the Pixies' catalog. He has also been involved in charity work, performing at benefit concerts. His influence extends to a new generation of guitarists who cite his unconventional approach as a major inspiration.
