Java is a genus of parasitoid wasps in the family Tiphiidae, primarily found in Southeast Asia. The genus was first described by the British entomologist Peter Cameron in 1900, with the type species Java flavipes.1 These wasps are known for their role as natural enemies of scarab beetle larvae, making them of potential interest in biological control programs.2
The genus Java was erected by Peter Cameron in 1900 in a revision of Oriental Hymenoptera.1 Cameron placed it in the family Tiphiidae, subfamily Tiphiinae, based on wing venation and other morphological characters. The type species, Java flavipes, was described from specimens collected in Java, Indonesia.3 Since then, several additional species have been described, including J. javana and J. nigra, though the genus remains small and poorly studied.4 Molecular phylogenetic analyses in the 21st century have confirmed its placement within Tiphiidae, close to the genera Tiphia and Pompiloides.5
Adult wasps of the genus Java are small to medium-sized, typically 5–12 mm in length. They exhibit sexual dimorphism: females are often larger and have a robust abdomen with a short ovipositor, while males are more slender with longer antennae.2 The body is predominantly black with yellow or white markings on the legs and face. The wings are hyaline with a dark pterostigma, and the forewings have a distinct costal cell. The propodeum (the first abdominal segment fused to the thorax) bears a characteristic pattern of carinae used for species identification.3
Species of Java are recorded from Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam, with a few records from southern China and India.4 They inhabit lowland tropical forests and agricultural areas. The females are ectoparasitoids of scarab beetle larvae (family Scarabaeidae), such as those of the genus Anomala and Adoretus.2 The female wasp stings the host larva to paralyze it, then lays an egg on its surface. The wasp larva feeds externally, eventually killing the host. The life cycle is completed in about 3–4 weeks under laboratory conditions.5
Despite its name, the genus Java is not restricted to the island of Java; species have been found on Borneo, Sumatra, and the Malay Peninsula.6 The original description by Cameron was based on a single female specimen, and many species remain known only from the type series. The genus is sometimes confused with the more common genus Tiphia, but can be distinguished by the shape of the clypeus and the presence of a prepectal carina.4 In recent years, Java wasps have been studied for their potential in biological control of scarab pests in sugarcane and coconut plantations.7 However, no commercial biocontrol programs have been established yet.
